THIS IS A FOLLOW UP TO AN E-MAIL SENT PREVIOUSLY ON 6/19/2009

Recently, you were sent an e-mail by the Office of Admissions and Relations with School indicating an urgency to complete WR 39A this summer at UCIrvine. We understand a majority of you may be in the process of completing the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR) or Academic Writing Placement (AWPE) exam, waiting for your May AP English exam score, have summer travel plans, or are being financially conservative in the current economic climate. As such, we would like to expand on that e-mail (copied below) and detail how this impacts you:

*You will not be behind *in your academic plan if you do not enroll in the course this summer. The deadline to complete the ELWR is the fall quarter of your sophomore year. There is plenty of time to complete this requirement and will be discussed in detail when we meet for summer orientation.

If you are considering taking WR 39A this summer, you do not need to participate in the Freshman Summer Start Program (FSSP). You may simply enroll in and pay for the course at https://summer.uci.edu/ without the additional fees associated with FSSP.

FSSP is not mandatory, nor will you lose any advantage for not having participated in it. FSSP was designed to guide students who wish to have an early college experience in the summer. Most freshmen have done well without participating in the FSSP.

If you wish to take WR 39A this summer and are unable to do so due to financial and housing concerns, you may take the equivalent of WR 39A at a community college. The community college course fees are considerably lower and an approved list of community college courses is available online. To find an approved community college course, please follow these instructions:

Dear Peter Anteater:

Welcome to UCI! Our records from the Analytical Writing Placement Examination
(AWPE) indicate that you have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement
(ELWR). This letter is to inform you about how you might meet the requirement
before you start other courses in Fall Quarter.

If your AWPE result indicates that you need to take Writing 39A (WR39A) or
Writing 39AP to complete the ELWR, we recommend that you consider enrolling in
a special offering of these courses this summer beginning July 6th and ending
September 11th. Demand for these courses will be extremely high in the Fall
and you will need to complete them before you can enroll in the two courses that
fulfill our first-year writing requirement. Any delay in meeting the ELWR can
create serious complications for the rest of your schedule and delay your
progress. Although community colleges often offer courses that meet the ELWR,
we recommend that you consider taking them in Summer Session at UCI. The
courses are designed especially for students who want to fulfill all or portions
of this requirement in the summer before their first year at college.

To assist you in selecting the best enrollment option, please contact your
academic counselor. You may find your academic units contact information at:
[UC Irvine Undergraduate Academic Counseling](http://www.admissions.uci.edu/academics/academic_counseling.html).

When you enroll in this course you will have the opportunity to live in student
housing and become a part of the Freshman Summer Start Program which begins
August 1st and runs through September 9th. This program offers specially
designed workshops to help you be successful at UCI as well as the opportunity
to build new friendships through extracurricular social events.

To register for Writing 39A or Writing 39AP, and the Freshman Summer Start
Program go to: summer.uci.edu/fssp/register.asp

We wish you a wonderful summer and look forward to your spending part of it with
us!

Sincerely,
