My child found out through online notification this weekend that she was accepted into her first-choice school. Within half an hour after the notification came out, we received a phone call from the school. They were congratulating us, and they were very nice, but I think their true reason for calling was to find out if we were going to say yes or not.

Is that unusual? Did anyone else receive that sort of phone call? I'd rather not go into specifics about the school, situation, etc., but I haven't heard of anyone else receiving a similar call, and something about the whole incident isn't sitting right with me.

Yes, we have received phone calls. I think it’s standard for some schools, a personal touch, other times it seems to be when a school really wants a particular kid (that hockey playing oboe player, maybe? ;)), who they think they might lose to another choice.

I think it falls in line with what someone posted about tours/interviews vs revisits; the former were about you impressing them, now it’s about them impressing you.

I know of at least one smaller school that calls all its admitted candidates - the applicant’s interviewer makes the call. There are probably other schools that do the same thing . . . or maybe we’re both thinking of the same school! :)

Yes, it’s probably partly a sales strategy . . . but it might also be a nice, personal touch, especially for students who have questions they want answered right now.

We got a call from one school that offered admission and one from a school that denied admission. Both said they wanted to share the news prior to us receiving the notification in mail.

We got two calls total: One from a school I never applied to but sent my SSAT scores to, and one from a different school offering me a scholarship.
