thanks jen, and icymoon

D got ID admission today with 12K per year distinguished trustee's scholarship(4 years), plus 6K per year Century scholarship( 2 years). Total is therefore 60K, plus at least 3K more for National Merit(could be as much as 8K but not likely; amount is need based). Need to keep 2.8 GPA to keep scholarship. Hope this info helps.

wow, thats a lot

wow congrats to your daughter redjayhawk. i guess the distinguished trustee gives different amounts to different people because i got 36k, not 48k.

I don't think you should be complaining, gospurs :p. (;))

got the same as redhawk's daughter
century scholars, to clarify, if awarded to those who have done research.
and distinguished...um...is for excellence in competitions? (im guessing)
and i think that unless you indicated rice as 1st choice for national merit...you wont get as much...but dont quote me. i'm not sure...
hope this helps

haha im not complaining by any means :)...i am really surprised that i even got a scholarship
yeah the national merit might be the difference. i was sick on PSAT day so i didnt even get a shot at all of that

is there any hope of getting merit if it wasnt in your admission package?

rainsparkle, apparently not. My mom just called the admissions office and as I suspected, no, all merit scholarship info is in your admissions packet.

haha well then im probably not going to rice! haha thats a simple desicion.
thanks for the info emilia!!

I got trustee's and century scholars too. Thing is, I haven't done much research; I just did some history day competitions and a lot of reading. I think my teacher might have written I had an aptitude for research, so maybe they look for ability too.

It's fine vig - there are people in century scholars who are like intel this and siemens that, but there are also people with no experience whatsoever.

hehe sorry about that then =) my bad

i got the 12K trustee and 6K century scholarships too. i thought scholarships might be redistributed if some students decline admission, but rice probably already factors in the yield rate and makes extra offers. i dunno..i'm probably not going to rice and i was wondering within what time frame i should decline in case it will make a difference in making scholarships available to other applicants.

If you plan on not accepting, I believe the Admissions Office would like to know ASAP, as they then go through their waitlisted candidates to determine who to make offers to. As for making scholarships available to those students, from my own experience (my son was waitlisted), we were told upfront that scholarships (only grants) would be available. He was a NMF, but received nothing from that. During the year they have moved some of his grants to scholarships, but nothing additional. Hopefully for the coming year he will receive some additional scholarships (i.e. less $$$ out of our pocket)...or we may just be naive about this. Does anyone know? Think I need to make a call today.

If your son is NMF and is at Rice, why didn't he get anything for that? I don't understand.

Thanks for the info about the Rice/Baylor thing, jenskate. It was really helpful.

And I got another big fat zero in financial aid, though, the way I see it, I'm getting an automatic 10k off with Rice tuition.

I put Rice as my first choice for National Merit, and I am a finalist. Will that scholarship offer come later?

Probably, but you might want to call and ask.

Woohoo!!

Just got my package and am being offered the Trustee Distinguished Scholarship and the Rice University Scholar. Yay, Rice!

congratulations Lindsey....now pay up and eat two scoops of Ice-cream. or I will have to complain to Bandit_TX.....entering Greenville city limits may be hazardous.
