Did bad in the SAT. What next?

You have probably seen a lot of threads like this, but here it is:

I live in Estonia (small 1mil population country in Northeastern Europe) and I am a high school student (12th grade/Senior). I took my first SAT I in November and got the underwhelming score of 1830 (570 cr - :(/620 - math/640 - writing). I hoped to score at least 2k and apply to some Ivies and some better colleges in general. So as of now, my plans are pretty much upside down. My application is decent (President of Student Council/2nd place in Men's II League handball with 10 years club membership/Different volunteer work), but I feel like I am not necessarily competitive anymore.

My question to you is what colleges should I go for now and how much did I reduce my chances overall? My whole college research was done on the basis of getting an acceptable score on the SAT and to be entirely truthful, I am pretty confused about what to do next. I have got some booklets through mail from Columbia, Northeastern U and Sarah Lawrence College (?).

I have an SAT II coming up in December. Is it possible (and if it is, beneficial) to take the SAT I that date instead? Do some top tier colleges accept January scores?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hi!
First of all, those scores are decent scores and I’m not convinced that you wouldn’t get into Northeastern with them. I do think that you can use scores from Dec. SAT I for regular admissions to schools but you should contact each school and find out. As far as other schools to look at, what area of the country, size of school and major?

I’m planning to major in International Relations or Political Science. I would love either California or New York, but I’m generally looking for the best university possible and I’m still hoping to get a scholarship. Is UCLA out of reach for me?

Hi!

I’m in the exact same situation as you. I got my SAT scores back today, and my scores were more or less similar as yours. I’m also applying to Colubmia and a few other ivies.

I think that what we both should do now is to nail our interviews, our personal statements and the SAT II tests since among tohers Columbia review every applicant in holistically. We also have grades, ECs an recommendation letters to depend on. So hopefully, our scores won’t drag us down too much if we do well on all the other things.

Hope I helped!

Yyoghurt, good luck :P, I sent my scores to Columbia too, not so sure about it anymore, I am actually doubting if it’s worth the $70.

Actually I wouldn’t mind a lower level college if I got decent financial aid.

I recommend checking out the college selection section of this forum and coming up with a better college list. You sound very confused about where to apply to.

For example, I know you’d like CA or NY, but unfortunately…so does everyone else. If you can handle going somewhere less popular, you may get a better education.
