Did I do the right thing?

It's been a few months since I made my college decision but I'm wondering if I did the right thing in turning down Berkeley and UChicago for SD. I'm not really the person who likes to look back and regret, but I'm not sure why I'm having these odd doubts right now.

I chose SD mainly because of location, general awesomeness, and scholarship. Do you guys think it was the right move?

Thanks,

flux

Wait until you get there, make friends, get involved in welcome week, etc. You will probably really like it!! I literally lovvve UCSD you just gotta get comfortable there!

Kinda’ asking that in a biased forum, don’t ya’ think? Of course SD is the best choice, surely over Berkeley, for all the same reasons that I didn’t even apply to Berkeley. Several people told me that their undergrad experiences at Berkeley were the worst years of their lives. Very limited support for undergrads, huge lower division classes, competition for every little extra-curricular activity, scarce housing, sad sad burned out homeless people all around the edges of campus. As for Chicago - seriously crappy weather in the winter and sticky muggy summers. On the other hand - SD has perfect weather year round, gorgeous scenery, high ranking but not pointlessly insane academics, and us.

Im kinda in the same boat, but im gonna give SD a chance. We haven’t even spent 1 whole week there yet so give it time. and if those feelings of regret are still there, then you transfer. heck you made it to those schools the first time, whats stopping you from applying to those schools again(albeit be much harder)?

I know how you’re feeling. Deciding between UCLA and UCSD was pretty damn difficult for me as well. Hopefully I made the right choice too.

Well… If you visited all three campus, and saw what fitted you, then only you can answer. From there on out, it is all about the choices you make and how you interact with the campus and the students there.

All in all, people have bad college life is a result of not trying to have a fun time because they are caught up in the prestige and rankings of a university and etc…

^Yes…

I also want to add that when all of you skepticals get to UCSD, don’t be focused on this and like mope around and think about the “what if’s.” Ignore your doubts, go out to every single welcome week event, join clubs or rush a frat, meet as many people as possible and try to make the best out of your college experience! Cause if you don’t try and you’re bummed out then it really won’t be enjoyable!

GET EXCITED only a couple more weeks!!

Thanks guys,

you’re right. I shouldn’t look back. Looking forward to warren orientation in a few weeks :)

I’m in Warren too, maybe I’ll see you there. As for Berkeley though, I visited the place and seriously did not like it at all. Besides being “prestigious”, I didn’t see anything good about it.

Just because Berkeley is considered the “best” UC, it doesn’t mean it’s the best place for you.

All throughout high school, UCSD was my dream school. My senior year, I started to do some research, and I found that UCSC seemed like a place that I would be so much happier at. I got into both, and there was so much pressure from all my family members to attend SD because of its prestige, but I felt that I’d be so much happier at SC…

Don’t dwell on rankings or prestige. Your degree is just what gets your foot in the door…after that, it doesn’t matter where you went to school for undergrad, all that matters are your abilities.

I chose SD over LA and some very good LACs, and feel that I wouldn’t be at the position I am in now if it weren’t for the undergraduate research ops offered by all my departments.

yea, i’m on the same boat :] I turned down Berkeley for UCSD and I’m also going to warren so maybe i’ll see you there. But it’s already too late to choose Berkeley now so why dwell on the what if’s. I think UCSD will be fun xD

I chose UCSD over Cal, too. Thought about what if’s a lot my first year, to be honest, but I don’t regret it at all now. I’ve got amazing people around me, the endless research opportunities everywhere, the gorgeous beach where I fish (and surf, too next year). Doubting your decision will only drag you down. So why do it?

So far, the only people who complained about UCSD are the people who are too caught up in their work and succeeding, or the people who consistently dwell on the fact that they could have done better–that feeling of regret. If you stay away from these and maintain a balance between your curricular and extracurricular activities, you will LOVE UCSD.

Dude, don’t worry. I ditched Princeton and other great schools (don’t wanna be a bragger here) for UCSD (for financial purposes though). I am hecka sure that I made the right choice.

Woah, Synchrotron, that is really admirable. I saw from your post history that you are also taking ECE 1A (seminar). I’m taking it too and maybe I’ll see you there.

Anyway, thanks a ton everyone, I’m feeling pretty confident in my choice right now.

Don’t look back, you’ll just bum yourself out. Make the best of your decision and you’ll have a hell of a good time.

When I lived in Alabama I used to go to parties, hit whitewater and Panama City Beach almost every weekend and date up to 3 girls at a time. These opportunities were open to people that turned them down and promptly complained that Alabama sucks and there’s nothing to do. I was sort of the same way until I forced myself to quit trying to hate my decision and made an effort to make the best of what I had available to me.

Personally I turned UC Berkeley down for UCSD! Both are great schools, and I don’t think either one is the “best” school for everyone. Both have their pro’s and con’s.

I know, parents and friends may be shocked, but that goes away after a few months. What matters MOST in the long run is how well you do in the college of your choice, and most of all, how you improve as a person overall.

Glad to have you here! Hope SD will be a blast for you! :D

Not sure what it is but threads like this bother me.

^ are you jealous or something  lol
