I had applied to UIUC rd and official results are out Feb 15. Well today I get an email congratulating me on my getting in and asking me to visit campus. Does this mean I'm in or someones playing a joke on me? Also, since I'm relatively new to the US, how good of a college is the UIUC? I heard it was pretty good, what are others opinions?
Thanks guys!

It was probably a joke.

come on dude, it was sent by the official email add. Why would the U of I do that?

I disagree with chocolatealtoids. My ds got a couple of acceptances way before the notification date for that college. They were also followed shortly thereafter by scholarship offers! I think this may be a way colleges try to get on the radar early for top candidates. It has certainly worked with my son - he's had a lot more time to think about going to those two colleges because he already knows he is in and what the money looks like!

I would call admissions and say, "I received an email congratulating me on admission to your school and asking me to visit. Could you tell me more about this opportunity?"

I hope this is for real and good news for you!!

haha, thanks for the positive answer huguenot, I'm literally on the edge here. Anyway turns out I'm not the only one, others have been getting them too. Hopefully I got in. What about the reputation tho?

I think chocolatealtoids was being sarcastic.

I don't know, sounded pretty serious and I almost had a heart attack when I read his response.

chocolatealtoids is rarely serious. Check his past posts. He's got a cynical streak a mile wide. No offense, choc.

To the OP: I received this email as well.

Are you an international applicant? Sometimes internationals get notified earlier.

Oh, and as for the reputation of UIUC, it is one of the top state schools in the US. I think its like forty overall in the rankings.

is top 40 good enough? also diehardcubsfan does that mean we both are in?

UNC did something similar last year or the year before. They sent similar emails (they read something like congratulations on your acceptance, we want you to pay money, come visit campus, sleep in a dorm yada yada yada) out to a bunch of random EA kids (some wound up accepted, some deferred, and some rejected). I'd send an email to the admissions office.

Is top 40 good enough? It depends on your academic profile and what you want in a college. Personally, I am shooting for the top LACs and several Ivy League schools, so no, I do not feel content with just getting in to UIUC.

I do think that it means that we have gained admission. I believe that UIUC probably sends these emails to students that they really want and thus feel like showing interest in such students is a necessity. I don't really know though.

That does not reflect well on the school.
