One scenario for Polihist's parents is that when the IRS finds out that the father is not single (if I have followed this correctly), they will re-do his taxes as Married Filing Separately and same for his wife. This is the most expensive way to file, for married people. They may owe more taxes, penalties, interest...

My hope is that these people are not filing a false tax return.

my mom said if anything like that happens im going to be the one blamed for it and they're definately going to kick me out if that happens(said earlier) so right now college is looking like a dream to me right now that I may have to put off until later because they let one lie turn into another and it just turned into a giant snowball thats collecting speed going down a hill.

The whole college process was easy to me so far until I got to the financial aid part. Previously I just had to rely on myself to make sure everything was done on time. Its almost the end of february and im turning in my FAFSA which could lead into some trouble.

I dont know what to do and its not even my fault.

your parents or maybe just one of them to post here or join this thread or start a new one for them?

Do you have a pastor or spiritual leader you could talk to?

A lot of this may be a little mixed up. I am not exactly sure if your folks are married nor if they are filing taxes incorrectly.

Polihist, how awful for you. You got caught between potentially getting in big trouble for misrepresentation on your FAFSA and having your mother getting mad and threatening to throw you out. Oh, man. No kid should be put in that position. You are staying remarkably composed. Hang in there. I hope it all works out okay. Really, the money from government education grants isn't all that great anyway. I mean, not to sneeze at any help, of course, but to risk so much for relatively so little (in the grand scheme of things) is just so misguided of your parents. I hope how ever it all turns out, that you are happy at college next fall and that your parents will have made their peace with you and be proud of you.

My parents don't know I come to this site and i'm afraid of what would happen if they found out I made a topic like this.
I was going to ask why they were filling seperately and if they were really married but i was being fussed at at the time so I didnt.

And I can ask my guidance counselor for help on what I should do since im sure she would be more than willing to help me.

Thanks rentof2
