hey, everyone, i am still deciding if I should apply to MIT or not. I have been a straight A student since frosh year, pretty strong stats (SAT:2150, 800x2 in iic and physics, 730 in chem, AIME: 6) and decent EC's with focus in physics and math. But...

I got a C+ in AP chemistry in the fall term, for many complicated reasons, and that just killed my GPA, even though the rest of my classes are quite good, A in multivariable and A- in AP phyiscs.

So i am wondering if that c+ in my fall term just pretty much ended my college dream, for MIT, or for any other ivies. Should I even bother to apply to these top schools at all after this dismal grade? Since my school's winter mid-term is in mid-janurary, i have a chance now to do well in chemistry and get a good grade for the mid-term. My question is can I mail MIT my winter mid-term grades and show how much i have improved in chemistry. thanks for your help

A C+ in AP Chem stop you? I'm in AP Chem and I'm not doing so well either(low B+), but definetely apply. It can't hurt and if u really want to go there, you'll always wonder "what if I had?"

I can empathize with your C+. In my junior year, I got a C+ in an honors English class, despite having very good grades otherwise. My GPA too took a big hit, but I explained myself in (hopefully) a mature way and presented a new outlook to prevent another C+ from every occurring again.

I don't think it will make or break your application, but unlike what others have said, it may actually help you. Your explanation may show your introspection and self-evaluation. It may also show that you are indeed a thinking, conscious human-being.
