Did i make good choices?

Please give me clear answers with support and please do not say that i should just stick with the right choice or something because i will consider trying to transfer if i have to.

ok here are my stats....
-I'm ranked 4th in class of 60
-unweighted gpa: 3.5
-I'm African American
-sat math: 620
-sat writing: 550
-sat verbal: 580
-my only extra curricular is symphonic, pep, and marching band
-i did 75 hours of community service which is required in Maryland for high school diploma
-current major is economics i am thinking about switching to finance

Ok now that that is over with and you have my background, down to business. I said my major is economics but i am seriously thinking about switching to finance but I'm not really stressing it because i'm fine with a major in econ and minor in finance because i think i like econ more anyway.

I applied to university of MD college park, Syracuse university, american university, university of MD Baltimore county, Rochester institute of tech and Georgetown university.

I got accepted to all except Georgetown maybe because i didn't go to the interview but i will never know. They offered to put me on the waiting list.

So my two best options were Syracuse and college park. Syracuse offered great financial aid and a scholarship while i got one scholarship from college park. I turned down college park and committed to Syracuse. The reason why i am in question tho is because i didn't realize college park had one of the top 30 business schools while i think Syracuse is more well know for public policy or their school of communications. I didn't do that much research because i was never sure of my major until very recently and econ is in the college of arts and sciences while finance is in business school.

I will clarify the career i am headed for. i want to shoot for a corporate management position, investments, banking, or something related to the stock market. I am not sure what i am doing because the people around me have no experience in this type of thing. What i was thinking is that as long as i get a good gpa while in undergrad and pursue the right jobs afterwards, it wouldn't matter anyway because i could possible go to a better business school for my m.b.a. which i hope to acquire after several years of work experience.

I think the reason for my confusion is due mostly to my inexperience, general confusion on what majors or schools will lead to which career and my parents also weren't very helpful, they kept saying i should apply to harvard and i was like whatever.

What does anyone think about my situation? Did i make a good choice of college? Should i try to transfer to college park or a better private school with a better business school and would have a good chance of getting in? Did i choose a good major for my career path?

DO NOT go in to any school with the intent to transer - that's a recipe for unhappiness. You'd be much better off going in with an open mind and seeing how you like it after some time.

To answer your question, Syracuse isn't bad. No, it's not a top-tier school like Wharton, but I've actually heard several good things about the business program. Give it a fair shot. And if you're planning on taking it to the graduate level, the name of your undergrad institution won't matter anyway (where you go to grad school matters more).

I'm not going to syracuse with the intent to transfer. I stated somewhere in there that really in a sense i am fine with syracuse. I can always go to get my M.B.A. elsewhere. I know its a big post and everything but please don't think i'm making a big deal of it. I just don't think i did the proper research when choosing where to apply and attend.

Just making sure.

I have a friend who did that (went to a school with the intent to transfer out right away), and her pessimism towards it made her absolutely miserable. I wouldn't want anyone else to go through that.

On another note, it seems like you've already made peace with your decision. :)

Enjoy Syracuse. It's a great school. Do well there and when the times comes you'll have a shot at an even greater selection of business schools.

oh and i forgot to ask someone with some experience in the business school area. Is it true that I can get an M.B.A. from a respectable business school even though I'm not going to a business school as an undergrad. I am getting a bachelor in economics in Syracuse's college of arts and sciences, i am not in the Whitman school of management but i want to try to get a minor in finance. I am not sure of the changes that would come to my schedule, financial bill, or anything else if i try a double major in econ and finance. I wish i found this site earlier. I'm not sure how stupid that question may sound but i have no real experience and there are only a few administrators at Syracuse i have contact with that i can ask these types of questions.

Yes, you can get into a good MBA program even if you're not in a business undergrad. You don't even have to major in business, econ, finance, accounting or anything else business related. Your work experience after undergrad is more important than your undergrad major. I know an anthropology major who went to Wharton after 6 or 7 years in the business world.

Do your best at Syracuse, find what you're passionate about, and work hard. You'll do fine.
