I just finished senior year and I decided to go to out of state to Umass Amherst with a pre vet major over SUNY Binghamton(in state) and a bio major.
Is the out of state tuition worth my more specific major since I already have a pretty good idea of what I want to do?
Also it looks like the Amherst area has a lot more to offer than Bing.
Any input helps.
You’ve made your decision and put down a deposit. Avoid buyer’s remorse-- find all the things you loved about UMass and focus on them.
Is UMass Amherst affordable without parental loans or private loans?
As a prevet, your odds are best in the ag school and if your university has a farm - is it your case?
Yes. UMass Amherst is a great place to go to school. Stockbridge and UMass medical center connections offer a lot of pre health and pre bet counseling and research opportunities. They have. A lot of resources. It’s a great college experience and college environment too.
I don’t know a thing about SUNY but I know it’s a good school.
My kid was just saying today that the pre-vet students who are involved in ag (animal) courses are really happy at UMass. But if it were me, and I were hoping for vet school, I’d go to the school that gave me the best odds of getting into a vet school, and were the cheapest (because vet school’s gonna be expensive, and vets don’t necessarily make that much).
Yes that’s key: which is most affordable?
She’s already graduated. Accepted UMA. Op did you pay a deposit at both? It’s not really worth reopening the value question. She has buyers remorse and the question is it a good school for her major the answer is yes. The value questions are valid but should have already been analyzed before you commit on May 1st. I didnt get a money issue. But op tell me if that’s the concern. I guess community college is an option. Or will SUNY take a spring admit at this time
Both are great schools and you would excel at either I’m sure. You chose UMass for a reason - enjoy, embrace and it will all work out!
Also you will have the added benefit of taking classes at four other very fine colleges through the Five College Consortium https://www.umass.edu/fivecollegeinterchange/
The OP has not been back to CC since the day this question was posted.
I can’t comment on your family financial situation. However, U.Mass Amherst is a great university with strong premed and strong animal science programs. From what I can see on-line their pre-vet program looks quite good also.
As long as your finances work out I think that it is a great choice.
Having a lot of experience with caring for animals will be very important if you get to the point of applying to veterinary school. Of course, being able to afford it will be important too (the ratio between the cost of veterinary school and the salary of a veterinarian is somewhat daunting).
