Basically I am in a deep panic because I received a F in Honors Chemistry for my second semester of my junior year. First semester I had a C. I always sucked at science with a trend over the year (yr1 CC,yr2 DC,Yr3 CF). Everything else has a positive trend of As and Bs. Freshman Year was mediocre (2 Cs, rest was As and Bs)

My stats/background follow:

I am rising a Senior in HS
I am a African American and Native American
I have a 3.1 uw/w GPA- HS has no Class Rank
I got a 26 on ACT
I'm a Varsity track and XC runner
I am a leader student group on race relations, and a Leader in the Minority achievement committee at my school
I am a very creative essay writer
I have have a few nicely written recommendation letters
I took 1 AP class and most Honor level classes from 9th-11th grade, Senior course load is 5 APs, 1 IB, and 1 Honors class
I am from Cleveland, OH
I plan to major in Economics and apply Early

I am really interested in Florida State, Univ of Central Florida, North Carolina State, Ohio State, and Purdue Univ. Did I screw myself over and will not have a decent chance of getting in?

Can you retake those courses? Ohio State and Purdue may not be options anymore, though.

@International95 I couldn’t durring this summer, and I am applying early to all schools (NC State 10/15, Ohio State 11/1, Purdue 11/1, Florida State 10/15, Univ of Central Florida 11/1). By then it will be too late, and they would know if I took a remedial course for those classes

Is there a way for you to add a safety to that list? Maybe like FAU/FIU (assuming you’re in Florida). I’d look up data plots for the schools you’re applying to and see where you stack up.

@TheAtlantic I’m from Ohio, Unigo says I have a 90% chance of getting in but I don’t know if I should believe it.

Hi wildfactor! Thanks for the chance!

The best thing about your predicament (which I don’t want to seem offensive, but it’s the reality of the situation) is your race. Being African American/NA will help a lot in terms of affirmative action, so you will have a good chance at all the schools you listed. Regardless, doesn’t mean it’s going to be that easy. Whatever downfalls you had in grades can be made up by raising your ACT score, having a strong senior course load (which you’re planning on doing), and writing GOOD essays. Also, try to stay involved EC-wise and maybe gain some more leadership in your community or school. That will be a great help to your app!

Good luck!

Just because you did not do well in one course does not define if you will get admitted into a college. You might be able to bring your GPA up in the first few weeks of school before you send your transcript to colleges. You might want to apply to more safety colleges. It won’t hurt. Also you can retake your ACT to improve your chances for college admission. You have great extracurriculars though. Good lucks
