I’m currently a junior becoming senior in high school. I recently received a D in Pre cal for the spring semester. According to the requirements, you only need three classes, which are algebra 1, 2 , and geometry. I’ve definitely passed those classes but it also states that you need three years of math courses. So, does that mean I’ve passed the requirements or not? Considering I don’t pass which means colleges will not accept me, should continue to make up the semester through an online class? My unwieghted gpa currently for junior year is 3.0+ and my weighted gpa is about to 3.5. My sat scores are at an acceptable range. I’ve asked my counselor the same questions but she gave blurry answers. Will CSUs accept or consider my application at this point?
When I google your question I find the following on the UC website.
"Math courses completed in the seventh and/or eighth grades with a grade of C or higher can be used to fulfill the mathematics (“c”) subject requirement. Students are not required to repeat these courses once they have entered high school. Students will list these courses in the “Seventh / Eighth Grade Course” section on the UC application. . . .
Because the student has already satisfied one year of the three-year requirement, they are only required to complete courses in Geometry and Algebra 2 in high school. However, the University recommends students to continue with math coursework beyond the intermediate algebra level."
You’ll want to confirm your HS requirements. In your situation, at our high school you would not meet the HS graduation requirements which requires 3 years of math in HS.
If your 3.0 uw GPA is 10-11th grade, I don’t think your UC capped weighted can by 3.5. That would mean you took a combined 8 classes during 10-11th grade.
- CSU's require the minimum of Algebra 1/2 and Geometry, so if you have passed all three than you have met the minimum requirements, however the competitive CSU's expect you to exceed these requirements if you hope to be admitted.
- Since you received the 2nd semester D in Pre-Calc, you did not pass the class.
- The D will be included in your CSU/UC GPA which only includes 10-11th grades, unless you repeat that semester.
- Repeating the 2nd semester will replace the D grade and bump up your CSU/UC GPA.
Here is the CSU/UC GPA calculator: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
Using the link below, you can find out which HS courses at your specific HS are considered "UC Approved Honors" courses to get the extra honors points in the CSU/UC GPA calculation. You cannot go by your own HS's weighted GPA since not all HS's will use the correct CSU/UC weighting system.

- Once you have calculated your CSU/UC GPA, then you can see how of much of an impact the D has on your GPA.
- CSU's admit by eligibility index (EI) and major so you need to know your test scores.
(CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math+CR) or (CSU GPA x200) + (ACT comp x10)
- You will then be ranked by your EI and major. If you plan to pursue a STEM major, you will want up to at least Pre-Calc before attending college.
- As @svlab12 stated that your HS may also have minimum Math requirements so check with your counselor.
- Finally, the CSU's also give priority to local applicants so the link below will show you what CSU is your local school.
