Did I ruin my chance for UChicago and CAL?

Well after a rough final quarter at UCD, my gpa slipped from a 3.96 - 3.79 b/c I took way too many tough classes and engaged myself in too many EC's. I have been worrying if I killed my chance at transferring to either one of those schools. I'm currently an econ major at Davis and I'm already half way to finishing my major.

Any inputs?

you might as well just drop out....

just kidding. taking harder classes and getting involved will only help you.
good luck.

If your extra-curriculars helped you discover something about yourself, then in the end, it would be for your benefit. And if you can demonstrate that in your essay, you should be fine. Don't let your GPA fall any further, though. Also, make sure you get a higher GPA next fall, since an upward grade trend is important to them.

don't worry too much about it. Hard classes are a good thing.

I got into equal tier schools with a 3.54 first semester GPA. Don't worry. Plus, you're coming from a solid university. Don't worry. Your GPA is very good. Major?

I'm majoring in economics.

Sorry, I didn't see that in the original post. I was also an Econ major. I had a 4.0 Econ GPA. They seem to care about the major you're applying for-not as much to say (oh, we need people for this), but more so to see if you're passionate (and good) in what you do.

I'd take a long hard look at what Chicago will actually allow you to transfer. They require you to take a placement test for math, [they don't give transfer credit for math classes] and will only allow you to transfer a set # of units. They require you to be in residence for 2 years, and require you to complete the "core" regardless of your major.

see the following link http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/credit/index.shtml

God lord...I had no idea that Chicago was so stringent about transferring credits. I'll have to reconsider my plans. Thanks a bunch menloparkmom...you may have saved me a lot of headaches.

Are most private universities against transferring credit?

Your welcome. Don't know, but I think most privates DO want you to be enrolled at least 2 years. So you may find the same situation at most top tier colleges.
