I've applied to UCLA, UCI, UCSB, and Berkeley. When I applied in November, I had a 3.8. This semester, however, I got 3 As and 3 Bs, so now my GPA is a 3.6. The average GPA for someone admitted to my major (philosophy) is a 3.2, so I'm still above that. However, because of the particular grades I got this semester, an equal number of As and Bs, did I ruin my chances of getting into UCLA, or any of the other three schools for that matter? I think that my personal statements were pretty good, but I'm still nervous. Thank you so much for any help.

No You’re good to go!

no, dont trip, thats a very competitive GPA for philosophy

I don’t mean to be a party pooper, but I just looked at the profile of admitted transfers for this past fall (UCLA), and the average GPA of admitted students was a 3.49. You’re still above, but it’s not as significant as, say, the gap between that of a 3.2.

The downward trend might look bad but your GPA is still very good and philosophy is not that impacted. As long as your essay is good, you should be in.

Thanks xMathx, ixr, and CalBearGuy, I hope it works out that way! [:

theregoesevan: Hmm thanks, I completely forgot to check the data for transfers for 2009. I was still looking at the 2008 numbers. Hopefully the 3.6 is still enough.

I would think that it is, as long as uve demonstrated that you can do well in philosophy classes, and ur essay are atleast decent (which Im gonna go ahead and assume they are).

@YoungCollegeGirl: The average admitted for a philosophy major is 3.49 for UCLA.

I got an A in my philosophy class, and I think my essays were pretty good, so hopefully that’ll help me!

No offense, but why would someone want to major in philosphy? Can you even get a job with that degree, unless you go to med/law school?

thebigsh0w: None taken. And yes, philosophy degrees are pretty much useless on their own, unless you want to be a philosophy professor. Luckily, I’m going to law school after undergrad! [:
