Did I ruin my shot at UCLA?

Hello all!

This is my first post on College Confidential, so apologies if this is not in the right format. I have a quick question - I am currently a community college student in Los Angeles and would like to transfer to UCLA. As of now, I have a 3.86 GPA and would like to major in Econ or BizEcon. Unfortunately, I received a B in my first Econ class (Micro) but have an A in my second Econ class (Macro) and straight A’s in my Calc series I-III. The B was received before I knew that I wanted to major in Econ. I volunteer at my local hospital and am in the process of forming a club at my community college. My question is… did that B ruin it for me in regards to UCLA or even Berkeley? Also, any recommendations to help me stand out as a transfer applicant are very much so welcomed. I still have around 1 and a half years to complete IGETC/prereqs to transfer, so in that time, how can I improve my chances?

Thank you to everyone who replies.

One B won’t kill your chances. However, the GPA for BizEcon is EXTREMELY high. You can see for yourself here: https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14_mjr.htm#LS

In the next 1.5 years you have, make sure to get excellent grades. Also look into BizEcon related ECs/internships

One B will not be a factor. Try and get an EC or two in there that is finance-related and shows leadership. Start a finance club at school, for example.

Yup like the posters above had said before, the B won’t ruin your chances but will put you at a disadvantage compared to those who didn’t receive a B. Some quality ec’s would really help you stand out and will more than make of for the B.
