I am currently a sophomore in UC Davis. In high school, I took some AP classes such as AP Calculus (AB) with a score of 4, AP Econ (Micro and macro) with a score of 4, and AP Psychology with a score of 5.
In my freshman year at Davis, I took some courses which included MATH 16ABC, ECON 001A, and PSYCHOLOGY 001. My question is, if I passed those high school AP tests, and the credits transfered over to UC Davis, does that mean I didn’t have to retake those courses at Davis? And since I did retake them, does that mean I get no credit and no grade for them?

I'd kinda like to know this too since I took AP Stats and am taking a Statistics class fall quarter. My guess is that it isn't for nothing considering I need STA 13 to fulfill my major prereqs. I think AP credits are good for your total unit count to graduate and serve as a way to place you in higher levels of classes but nothing beyond that. I doubt that you'd get no credit/grade for the classes you took freshman year because of your APs.

It really depends. AP scores in high school were for "college credit." But it also depends not just on getting into higher classes, should you choose to, but it depends on what graduate school you're aiming for.

The pattern of high school doesn't really follow in college as much as it does getting classes you need, classes you like, and doing well in them. Sure, you can easily use them towards grad credits. In fact, speaking with admissions, they give you AP credit regardless if you want it or not, and it's up to each staff adviser to decide how it's being used.

So would that mean that I don't have to take the stats class I'm enrolled in if I passed the AP exam? Or do I still have to because it's prereq for my major?

no, you don't have to take it again. u arent allowed to use AP credits as a GE, however. but otherwise you get to say u took the class, and also recieve at least the number of credits allotted.

btw, if you hadnt taken those AP tests, u mite not have gotten into UCD. so we kind of do need to take them even tho it mite not help some of us at all with classes :)

so if u choose to retake a class even tho u've passed the AP test, then u just don't get those AP credits right?
and is it possible to skip certain classes in a series (ie math 16a,b) but then take 16c, even if ur AP score allows u to skip all a,b, and c?

You need to make sure that the Undergraduate Admissions office received your test scores and issued you credit for those exam scores. If credit was given for those exam then your academic adviser in your college can determine what those credits are used for. In some cases regardless of the AP Score the adviser will require you to complete the course at UC Davis. I'd make an appointment to speak with an academic adviser to get these questions answered.

You probably didn't have to take those classes, because your AP scores would have given you credit for them. But it's not like it was for nothing. If you got good grades in them (which you should have since you got good grades on the AP exams), then those good grades are boosting your GPA. So yeah you have to take more classes at UCD than you had to, but your GPA is also higher as a result.
