Did I waste my money applying to UCLA? Is my GPA too low?

Ok, this won't be such a great manifesto, but here goes:

Intended major: Economics

If it matters at all i'm an Indonesian-American and I live in-state.

UC GPA: 3.77. This was the result of two failing grades in the first semester of my sophomore year :(
SAT: 1600/2350 (all in one sitting)
SAT IIs- World History: 800, Math 2: 710
AP: Psych, Art History, English Lang and Comp, Comp Sci, World History, US History- All 5s, (self studied Psych and World History)

I worked hard on my personal statements, my AP English Lang teacher liked it, as did my AP English Lit teacher, and my Honors Chem teacher (who has an MFA in Literature).

Senior Year Schedule:
AP Physics C
AP English Lit
AP Stats
AP Calc AB/BC
AP Gov
Spanish 3

ECs and Achievements:

Captain of Quiz Bowl Team (team went to the NAQT nationals last year in Chicago, won't tell you where we placed but I will say that we placed in the top 30)

Captain of Varsity Golf (I set several records at 4 different courses, but nothing special)

Science Olympiad team member

Ocean Science Bowl team member

Member of the Senior Men and Women (it's basically an honor society for the seniors)

Constitution Team co-captain

I volunteer at a nonprofit for veterans of the Iraq War, approx. 300 hours logged in

No, you have a legitimate chance with that SAT.

Your GPA isn’t even that bad…

@hahalolk

Yes it is. Most of the people from my school that have been REJECTED from UCLA had at least a 3.9 UC GPA

It could happen.
Better than regretting NOT applying to UCLA.
Good Luck.

“Yes it is. Most of the people from my school that have been REJECTED from UCLA had at least a 3.9 UC GPA”

that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily linked to their GPAs. they could have been seen as otherwise undesirable applicants.

btw, the 3.77 isn’t bad…unless it was caused by 2 failing grades…any reason for that?

Are you from California?

people are always thinking that GPA/SAT are the key factors. not necessarily, since UCLA goes through holistic admissions.

Wasted money is better than kicking yourself later for NOT applying and wondering “what if”.

I applied just for the hell of it, I didn’t think I would get in. I was already subconsciously set on going to UCD with like half of my senior class. You just never know with these things, especially with holistic admissions where your number stats are not the be-all-end-all of your app…

thats a ridiculous SAT tho

Don’t be so hard on yourself man. You have a legit chance.
Your GPA is good. SAT is terrific. Show leadership as captain in your EC’s. AND you’re in-state.
All you gotta do is write a kick ass essay and hope your teachers write solid recs.

UCLA does not accept recommendations from teachers. I disagree that OP’s GPA is good/SAT is terrific. They are both below average. EC’s are good though, so I think UCLA is a reach for the OP. No point in worrying about it now though. Just wait for the results.

when did a 2350 SAT become less than terrific, White?

I was unaware that the average stats were in the top 1-ish percentile. Wow, that’s impressive.

Oh right, it’s also totally wrong.

Just make sure you join the quizbowl team here! We need some people that know social sciences! BTW, are you coming to states?

Since the F’s are in sophomore year, that should be good since it shows an upward trend, your ECs are fine, and SAT Amazing. Probably up to luck of the draw; I wouldn’t be shocked either way, but I would really like you to get in so that the quizbowl club doesn’t die here.

Could somebody tell me a bit about the quizbowl? I’m a prospective transfer as a Psych major for fall 2010. I love Psych, and I have also taken 8 Psych classes already. I’m wondering if my knowledge in Psychology could help the quizbowl team.

Thanks for any and all information, guys!

My bad, I only saw the 1600.

Ive got the same story as VTEC. I applied to UCLA for fun.

If at the time of your application process you thought even for a moment that the school would consider you, then there would be no reason to regret applying.

Does UCLA look over any letter of recs then?
And how come they don’t look at teacher recs…those are a big plus for me.

I’m actually president of the club here, so anything you want to know, just send me a private message and I’ll answer it best I can! Basically, we practice twice a week, then go to tournaments about once a month, and host high school tournaments about once a quarter, and college tournaments about once a quarter. We’re just looking for people that are interested in learning about a wide variety of areas and like to play for the fun of the game- by no means are we favorites at national tournaments, but we usually take 2nd or 3rd in regional competitions (we’re about even with UCSD and UCI, but behind Stanford if they play their best team).

^^ Wow seriously dinoian? Are you (i’m going by initials here) KL or DW or someone else?

If I get in I’ll definitely join the QB team since I am indeed a Social Science and Lit specialist on my team. Admittedly, I do best on TRASH questions :D.

And yes, we are going to states in April.
