My son narrowed down his choice to Hopkins and Case. At Hopkins we have to pay full. At Case we got a hefty merit scholarship. My son wants to go to med school. People are telling us that Hopkins does not take a lot of their own pre-med students into their medical school and an undergrad from hopkins did not help much in admission to a good med school.

To all former premed students at hopkins who read this posting, did a Hopkins undergraduate degree translate into a good med school admission? or let me rephraze it here "did $200,000.00 = good med school admission???"
Any advice would be appriciated.

are you kidding me? why don't go to Case and do well there? you'll still have a good chance of med school acceptance and you don't have to shell out a fricking house?

that's why we are strugling with the descision. Between undergrad and med school a family like us who are not wealthy yet we did not qualify for fin aid will end up paying close to half a million dollar per child. I do not know if he'll be earining anything close to that when done with med school.

I was faced with the coice between Hopkins and Case. I qualified for financial aid at Hopkins and recieved an equally large merit scholarship from Case. I chose Hopkins becasue it is the better school. However, if money is an issue Case Western is still a very good university. Your child still will have a very good chance a getting into a good medical school if they have good GPA and MCAT.

As I grew up in Cleveland I can say it is a good place to go to college. Perhaps Case has a better location than JHU. Well, concerning Medical that is. For comparison it is perhaps a step down from Carnegie Mellon, but still it is the best college in all of Ohio I would say, especially if you like the math and science fields. And it's medical school is highly ranked. Top 15? It doesn't have the national reputation like JHU, but in the midwest (including my lovely home of western pa) it is a well-known school. And oh.. Cleveland rocks...

not true.. i heard at jhu that hopkins med school takes more of their undergrads than any other school.. last year about 11 jhu undergrads were accepted to hopkins med, and the year before, about 20... out of roughly 200 that are accepted

but if case is giving a lot of money and finance is an issue, i'd say go to case.

"20... out of roughly 200 that are accepted"
For a student with financial concerns, I don't see the value in spending $200k to go to hopkins with the hopes of getting into hopkins med school(20 out of 200 accepted, thats still only 10%!).

its very hard to get into hopkins med and going to hopkins as an undergrad may improve your chances
