I am an extremely hard-working student, and no i dont have senioritis yet. I was deferred ed to cornell's cals school. Unfortunately, i will be getting a C on my 2nd quarter grade report for ap bio. however, my other grades are relatively the same i was wondering how this would impact me:

1st quarter senior year:

AP Calc: A
AP French: B+
Economics: B+
English 12: A
Orchestra: A
AP Biology: B

2nd quarter grades:

AP Calc: A
AP French: A
Economics: B+
English 12: A
Orchestra: A
AP Biology: C+

some of my grades have gone up, some stayed the same, and one has gone down (bio). my question is: did i ruin my chances at getting in regular after being deferred? this would be such a disappointment. I study so much for bio and i just dont get it. Its not like im slacking bc my other grades are the same if not better. what do you think?

You might have. Your grades are low over all. How does your school report those grades, by semester average or breakdown by quarter? Son’s school only shows mid year average to those schools that ask for those grades, but have to give first quarter grades for early programs since that is all that is available. Ask to see the actual grade transcript sent to your colleges. It would be very nice if your AP BIO averaged out to a B or B- for the semester.

these grades are definitely not low for cornell. look up the stats. since its only half a letter grade, i assume it wont be that big of a deal. might the admissions office take into account the fact that i improved in one class and that i maintained the rest? im not positive on how my school sends the grades out. since cornell has already seen my first quarter during early decision, i assume 2nd quarter will stand alone. Im gonna try to get some extra credit for this class or something. I am also sending in 2 additional letters of recommendation - one from a teacher who chose me for a leadership position, and one from an alumni who recently received the cornell alumni achievement award. do you think this will help at all?

The C+ isn’t going to help you, that’s for sure. A C+ looks bad on a transcript, even if the overall GPA is within range. Given you were deferred, Cornell is not looking for any declines in grades at all. I doubt the extra letters will mean anything. I’m not optimistic about your chances given the deferral, but you’re still definitely in the running. Good luck!

If it makes you feel any better, kody, my son was also deferred from Cornell in December and is also pulling less than spectacular midterm grades. When I politely asked him ***, he told me (among other things) that lots of kids were messing up much worse than him. I don’t know if that’s mom-soothing bs or not, but the truth is that it’s done and all he can do now is hope that the rest of his app is strong…and learn to love his safety. Good luck.

i think it depends on the reason that you are deferred and not rejected by Cornell. if you gpa was the reason to put you on the deferred list, then this C+ will impact you.
