Hey, I know it isn’t great but it isn’t a 52! Take a read please!
“For you, a thousand times over” This quotation is an important quote from The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini because it’s meant to express deep love. And this is why it’s such an important piece throughout the book, first being used by Hassan on page 67 and was last used by Amir on page 371. The first time this quotation appears in the book is when, Hassan tells Amir “For you, a thousand times over” (67) is where he is running after the blue kite. And it is because of that kite that it’s the basis of the book and to why the book is turned into a character filled with guilt. Later on in the book in Hassan rape scene it shows the reader that Hassan has unconditional love for Amir at this point, Amir doesn’t accept it which makes the area in the book more detrimental to the characters affected in this scene.
But even when Amir tries to run from his problems and attempts to forget his guilt. He is left with the feeling down knowing he defrayed Hassan’s unconditional love back in Afghanistan. On page 194 Amir seems to dream of this “Hassan running in the snow, the hem of his green chapan dragging behind him, snow crunching under his black rubber boots. He was yelling over his shoulder for you, a thousand times over” (194)
Amir seems to redeem himself later in the book by saving the Soharab, and because of that there is a change in Amir’s personality and attitude. Amir is no longer scared to stand up for himself, and does not care if anyone detests him in anyway. His new change in his personality gives him the chance and power to love Sohrab uncontrollably as Hassan had loved Amir. For example, on 216 we see this come to light when a letter is written from Hassan to Amir “I have told much about you to Farzana jan and Sohrab, about us growing up together and playing games and running in the streets. They laugh at the stories of all the mischief you and I used to cause!” (216) in this quote we learn that Hassan has somewhat forgiven Amir and doesn’t dislike Amir for not standing up to Assef when Hassan was raped. This letter represents the embodiment of “For you, a thousand times over” Where it connects to Hassan. We can see this at the end of his letter “And I dream someday you will return to Kabul to revisit the land of our childhood. If you do, you will find an old faithful friend waiting for you” (218) This can connect back to “For you, a thousand times over” because it’s showing that despite everything that has happened he is still waiting for Amir to be close once again, He has shown his loyalty and forgiveness to a person he still cares about even though he was put under a lot of pressure.
Amir Try’s to be good again, by ultimately saving Sohrab from Afghanistan. Amir seems to redeem himself this way by bonding once again with him, eventually showing his true loyalty to Amir. When in America, Amir understands what it feels like to be an inferior person relating to Hassan, of what he might have felt as a friend and also a Servant to him.
In today’s society, many people can relate to the saying “For, a thousand times over” As it can refer to many situations in someone’s life. This saying can relate many instates of loyalty, it shows that someone who makes mistakes will standby someone’s side no matter what happens. We can see this take place through the relationship of Hassan and Amir throughout the book. In society this takes place through marriage people stand by their loved ones no matter what happens “For better, or for worse” This all ties together as loyalty to one another, and how we will forever fight for someone we ultimately care about, just as Hassan did for Amir’s mistakes.
