Did Not Apply for Financial Aid Can I Still Do it Next Year?

Hey guys,

So I had no idea I was supposed to do financial aid for most of the schools I was applying for BEFORE most of the deadlines for these schools.
Therefore, I have no financial aids from these schools.
However, if I were to get into one of these schools I didn’t apply financial aid for, can I apply for the next year or semester?

Trying to see if I can still save some money for the next year.
Thanks!

Ar some schools yes, at other schools no. Ask the schools!

Sweet
Thanks for your quick reply!
I guess I’m just looking for a general consensus of how schools and their financial aid works
If it helps im applying to schools such as:
UNC, WashU, Northwestern, USC, NYU, Emory

It depends on the school and their policies.

It is mid april, if you are a freshman, you already know if you have been admitted to these schools?

If you are a transfer student, then I understand that you may not have a decision or a financial aid packet yet. If you are applying as a transfer student, do you have time to still apply for financial aid? If yes, and you are going to need aid, I would recommend that you do so ASAP.

Are you a US citizen/Permanent resident? If yes, you will minimally be eligible for federal aid if you qualify. You will have to check their policies regarding financial aid after admissions.

Are you an international student? If yes, some schools have policies in place that if you do not apply for financial aid freshman year when you originally apply to the school, you cannot get aid in subsequent years. If you are a transfer student, some schools will not offer aid who are international students and are transfers, while other schools have policies in place that if you don’t apply for aid when you are admitted, you will not get aid in subsequent years.

You have to check the financial aid policies at each school to see how this will affect you based on your application status.

Contact each school and ask. There is no way to know otherwise.

Looks like you are a transfer from Binghamton. Do NOT withdraw from that school until you KNOW FOR SURE that you can pay for one of the others.

Like people have said already, different schools handle this differently. Most know circumstances can change. But need aware schools, and especially Washington University at St. louis, give full pay students a much better shot (yeah Wash U fans and nay sayers will protest this but it is pretty well documented) of being admitted compared to those applying for aid. So those schools are also aware that some students may hold off applying for aid in year one to get that favorable admissions outcome and then may come asking in year two. I’d bet those schools, and especially Wash U, are less inclined to say yes to those students in Year two.

Lostaccount…that would apply only to schools that are need aware for admissions.

I think the OP needs to contact the college(s) and ask. He will likely get different answers depending on the schools.

This is a transfer student. Hard to believe he didn’t know about applying for financial aid!

Yes, I think we agree thumper1.

Haha
Thank you so much guys.
I admit I was really incompetent the first time I applied to college (I only applied to 3)
All of them being SUNYs and since I knew I wasn’t qualified for aid I didn’t bother applying (Not to mention my mom helped me out with the entire process)
With all the horror stories I heard about financial aid I was actually led to believe that I would get $0 in grants (that its all sub/unsub loans) when applying to these 50k tuition schools… -_-
Whereas in reality people would be getting 10-25k in grants coming from my position (Middle class income family).

I really wish I had known about this sooner. I know its a bit spoiled of me to ask colleges to be reaching out to me about this stuff. But because I didn’t really seek out the help of counselors or have friends who went through the process, I feel like it wasn’t as black and white. I know i’m not alone.

No, you’re not alone. Some kids think they’ll get to go to school for free no matter where they apply. Others may be eligible for aid, but don’t realize until it’s too late. And the vast majority make the mistake of assuming that aid will be the same everywhere - which it clearly isn’t. I hope this ends up working out for you - good luck!!!
