I'm in a very very bad scenario. I was just recently emailed by a professor that I had not turned in the take-home final yet, and I told him that I was simply auditing the course. However, checking bearfacts a few minutes later, I realized just how wrong I was! I was under the impression that I had dropped the course and was simply auditing it, and I had no recognition that I was even in the class.

Is there any way I can petition to a dean (or something similar) so that I can truly drop the course? Has anyone else been in a similar situation? I'm truly out of options here, and I'm assuming that if I am not able to drop the course, I'll be stuck with an F on my transcript!

Sorry, but you’re ****ed. They only allow drops this late for exceptional cases. Negligence isn’t an exceptional case. Sorry to be blunt and harsh, but this is completely your fault. You should have checked telebears + bearfacts earlier in the semester to see if you were still enrolled.

You will receive an F in the course. No big deal. Retake it and do the best you can then.

Yeah, it’s definitely my fault. My very last option would be to retake the course, get an A, and have the F still appear on the transcript, which I then comment on for grad school apps. I know my major department is lenient on replacing grades like this, but I’d still prefer a fat “W” or something similar instead of a fat F.

The course isn’t a major requirement or even used to fulfill my grad requirements, and I wanted to check it out purely for fun. I guess now I’ll really have to take it when it shows up again…

I have seen cases where students thought they were in the class but discovered in dead week that they had actually dropped / been dropped earlier in the semester. The dean allowed them to enroll again during dead week. But not sure if it works for the opposite case like yours.

To be honest, try to talk with the professor. Schedule an emergency office hours if can? I think if you are sincere enough + if he’s REALLY understanding, he can help you get a W/I in the class. Need to approach this problem properly though. If that doesn’t work, just retake it next semester. I know it sucks to be in this situation, but that’s life :(… I’m so sorry about it.

Honestly, go talk to the Registrar. They’re not nearly as strict as people think. Most people simply don’t make appointments because they assume they will not get an exception or excuse, but you might!
