Did not get desired housing :(

Ok so my DD did not get into anyone of her top 8 choices...she is rather bummed.

I have heard that if you don't like your housing assignment that you may be able to change it...Marc...are you around with any advice??

Here is what she got:3010 OAK KING

All girl dorm, she wanted coed, or at least to be MWL or Friley. Does it help to call? Maybe if we said we would take one of the suite's? Not sure how this all works...

anyone run into this? Or are we way off base and is this a great place to live?? That would make her day!
Any thoughts would be welcome-
j

My son had a bad roommate experience while he was living in Friley (nothing against Friley). I won’t go into the details, but we were able to get him moved into Birch (all male) dorm and he couldn’t be happier. It’s a single, which is another plus. He looks forward to getting his room back in the fall. Also, the east side of campus has a different feel according to my son. His classes are actually closer to Friley, but he now prefers living on the east side.

I’m not familiar with OAK hall, but as stated before, there will be opportunities to move if she doesn’t like it.

Hi Jasper…thanks so much for the advice. I hope that it will be fine. I think that it was the initial disappointment that she did not get anything that she wanted and was in an all girl dorm…she just wanted a coed one.

I am sure that every dorm has it’s pluses and minuses, I am really glad to hear that your son likes where he is at now. Since my DD is going to major in athletic training I am telling her to focus on how close she will be to Folker, where most of the major classes are.

What year is your son? Does he love ISU?

it isn’t too bad there. One of my friends lived in elm and she loved it.

as i said, look 2 weeks after school starts, access plus then opens all the available rooms (some people end up not going last second) and there she can email and call all the rooms open and hang out and possibly move in together.

also an all girl dorm isnt too bad, it will be clean lol. Larch and many coed dorms were disgusting simply because it was where all the underage people drink and throw up everywhere.

I would love to know more about the east side feeling vs. the west side feeling. Also, does anyone know if it would be possible to actually see actual rooms to take measurements when we’re there for orientation? (DD wants to measure window, closet, etc. She and future roomie have grand plans for decor!) I think that these kids will adapt very easily. We just have to keep the focus on the fresh start and the prospects that ISU provides.

Actually, you can switch into openings on Access+ during the summer (I switched into a single room last summer). The system opens up June 3rd. Just go to ‘campus housing’ then ‘search assignments.’ and then you can get into openings without hassle. Maybe she should see if she likes her roommate before switching?
Just wanted to add that Oak is the closest building to Lied (and really close to forker) and will have a brand new dining center in the basement. It will be the only dining center opened continuously and until 10 pm, while others close at 7-ish. Plus Seasons is close. It is all girls, but the building is clean. The furniture isn’t new, but it works. Oak-Elm is usually a quieter dorm, which she may like. However, it isn’t for everyone. She might just have to wait and see if she likes it.

And there is a different feeling in RCA (east) compared to UDCC (west). I’m not really sure how to discribe it or why there is a difference. It could be that UDCC has the suite-style dorms, which are more expensive and they themselves have a different feeling than traditional dorms. Actually, I think a un-air conditioned double costs about $150 more in friley/helser than in RCA, at least it did last year. Or it might be that engineering and music departments are on the west side, but departments like College of Ag & life sciences and atheletic trainings are on the east side.

Thanks so much for all the good advice everyone. DD has been posting on the FB page Iowa State 2014 and has found some girls in her dorm. The entire Track team is in this dorm per the coaches requirement.

She has decided to try Oak. Waiting for roommate’s to be posted on Wednesday, then she will reach out and see how that goes.

She is excited about how close it is to Folker, where all the Athletic Training classes are and to Lied if she needs help. She likes the fact that the dining center will be new and have a coffee house, and that the dorm will be cleaner.

I think that she will be fine here and she is looking forward to it…thanks everyone for your input…could not have gotten thru this process without you!

I am so happy for you and your DD. We have graduation this weekend and then our girl will be completely focused on orientation. Does anyone know if she should have an idea of classes and sections before the big weekend?

buzymom3,
glad to hear daughter will give Oak a try.

Sorry for delay in answering your question.
Son is going into sophomore year this fall.
Yes, he loves ISU. Last semester was very challenging, but he did well.
He really appreciates the great
opportunities he has been blessed with at ISU. He just left for a summer internship this weekend. Not a real common thing for a engineering freshman.

I hope ISU proves to be a great place for your daughter. Good luck.

MWL is dirty haha… too many drunkards and the freshmen tear the place up. If i were your daughter, i’d be happy for getting into Oak… it’s right near the business side of campus, and there’s a dining hall in the same building.

Then, when she turns 19, she can transfer to Buchanan, which I would HIGHLY recommend. The people here are very studious, it’s clean, and it’s right across from the memorial union (good if you don’t want to walk far to eat on a saturday morning)
