<p>I’ve not actually known anyone for whom it happened, but supposedly the small number of $2500 awards that are declined will be re-awarded to the next candidates on the list.</p>
<p>Yes, I heard exactly what BobWallace said when I called NM earlier on to get info. They said that they don’t send out the “rejection” letters (ie the letter saying that you didn’t get the $2500 NM award) until early May, and that is why: once in a great while someone declines the award, and then it is given to someone on a wait list of sorts.</p>
