On the website, I couldn't find anything about their own application for the current admissions cycle. Does that mean they completely switched to the Common App?

You’re absolutely right. Princeton did switch to the common app this year. Last year their own application was right on the admissions website, now it’s not there. Also, if you go on the common app website, and click on “view college details” for Princeton it will say “Exclusive User of the Common App: Yes”.

They’ve made a couple of changes this year, including changing their subject test requirement to 2 tests rather than 3.

does anyone know the reasoning behind this? it seems as if they are making it easier to apply, which could be a good/bad thing depending on who you are…

I think they do want to make it easier to apply. A lot of schools have gotten rid of their own applications and switched to the common app. Now that they’ve dropped an SAT II, I think Harvard is the only school that requires three (I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure this is true). I’m not sure what the school will gain from this. I’ll google it and see what I can find.

Here’s an old, old article from Princeton’s website. It’s from when they began to use the common app in 2005, and I think the reasoning for now switching to the common app completely is probably similar.

It’s basically just saying that the administration wanted the school to become more available to a broader range of students, and also to dispel stereotypes that label Princeton as an elitist institution. I’ll keep looking for more current info, because I’m curious to find out more as well.

Here’s a quote if you don’t want to read the whole thing and a link if you do:

“There’s nothing wrong with the current application but we need to reach more students from more backgrounds and we need to be more accessible,” she said. “We also need to start breaking down the stereotype that is out there in some circles that we are elite and untouchable in some ways and we need to reach students where they are.”

SailorMoon: No, Georgetown also requires 3, while Johns Hopkins RECCOMENDS three.

I couldn’t find anything else :(

@ noreally: Ok, thanks for clearing that up. I wasn’t sure if there wer any other schools that require three, but I guess there are :)

I thought you were supposed to fill out the Common Application and the Princeton supplement or something like that…

Yeah, there is a supplement. It’s just that last year you had two choices:
- Fill out Princeton’s very own application
- Fill out the common app with the Princeton supplement
This year #2 is the only option.

I think its a good thing, except I liked the look and feel of Princeton’s app better. Dropping an SAT 2 is really awesome as well.
