Did Schwarzenegger cut any of the 2009-2010 grants students were promised?

Will the budget crisis affect funding for the class of 2013?

Way too early to tell. I would not be surprised to see Cal Grants cut in the next couple of years, but the 2009-2010 financial aid offers have been locked in, I believe.

Since we did not pass the 1A and 1B, California schools are all kind of screwed. Well actually they probably would have been screwed anyways even with 1A-B.

The class of 2013 is screwed for its first year or two until the recession subsides

The Governator has absolutely zero authority to rescind an approved budget item (that he signed into law). He has proposed to the Legislature that they cut the program next year. Of course, if the Legislature votes to continue Cal Grant program, he could (I believe) use his line-item veto to eliminate the program.

Stay tuned.

^Clarifying my prior message

What I meant was more pertaining to getting into classes and having various resources available

Thanks for the info blue. I was starting to worry. [:

Thanks to the un-transparant nature of the budget, I can’t really tell what the governor means. But that said, remember that budgets are worked out in a back room in Sacramento and are usually voted on and implimented on very little notice. So although I don’t necessarily think that Cal Grants will be eliminated (I don’t think the Democrats would allow that) I would not count on them. If at all possible, try to have a way to make up the lost money if the Cal Grant is taken away, a plan B of sorts.

This would only eliminate the funds that are listed as Cal Grants on the award offer right? I got 1.5k for 09-10 for cal grant b

The California budget is full of bullsh.it rules, so we cannot count on the state Democrats to protect the UC. Basically, they need 66.666…% of each house to vote for the budget. Democrats are just a couple votes shy of 2/3rds in both houses, so the Republicans can stop any budget. There is an initiative that is circulating that reduces this bogus rule down to 55%. Hopefully it makes the ballot for the Jun 2010 gubernatorial primary election (side note: this is most likely when the prop 8 reversal initiative will be, so this won’t be some no-show election)

Dear god, don’t take my Cal Grant away THIS year. It makes a huge difference in my financial aid package…watching all of these various state budget cut proposals makes me wish I committed to a faraway private liberal arts college instead.

Try capitalizing God when you speak to Him on a message board -_-

^ Sorry. I’m not a Christian, so it’s more or less only an expression of speech for me. If it makes you happy…dear GOD.

I’m pretty sure Cal Grants aren’t going to be cut this upcoming year, but it will likely the year after until California gets out of its damn hell hole.
