Hello!
So I will be attending UVA in the fall, and I just took the Spanish placement test they give online and scored 318 which puts me in SPAN 1060. I took four years of spanish including IB spanish SL and always did pretty well (Although spanish was never my best subject). I truly feel this placement test did not demonstrate my abilities as it says this class is designed for those with 1-2 years worth of HS spanish, so I’m wondering if there is anything I can do to perhaps move up to the next level spanish, considering I was a mere 8 points from the next level? Thanks!
UVA languages are really intense - I took 5 years of German and placed into 201. I ended up taking Hebrew and I learned wayyyyyy more Hebrew in 4 semesters than I knew German in 5 years. Especially if you didn’t take HL then it’s probably an accurate placement.
At worst, I would follow these directions:
I placed into SPAN 2020 but don’t feel comfortable taking that level. I would like a refresher so I need permission to take SPAN 2010. Students may not self-place in a language course. If you placed into SPAN 2020, you are not permitted to take any course at a lower level. The department asks that you try the original course for at least 4-5 class meetings, and if it is too difficult for you, you can visit Professor Emily Scida during her office hours.
