when entering college, did you buy a new camera?

And if you did, how much did you pay for it, and was it worth it?

Totally suggest it.

Don't need a super expensive one. Get something small and reasonably cheap bc bad things can happen. Especially at parties, etc.

I landed myself a PowerShot SD450. It came out to about $300 (including two 512MB memory cards).

And I think it's a pretty decent camera for an amateur photographer such as myself.

relatively cheap as in...

as in, if you lose it, you can buy yourself a replacement...
or, just don't lose it lol.
parties: DO NOT set your camera/cell phone on a table in plain view... what else are pockets for?
just always keep electronics and valuables out of plain sight. crimes of opportunity are the most common so take away the opportunity and you keep your stuff =P
and i also got a powershot sd450, but if you just want to point and shoot go with something less fancy. i'd consider it an intermediate, not entry-level, camera.
and i'm hoping not to lose it as well...

Get a Canon SD600 from www.fatwallet.com for $250.

hmm cuz im really debating whether i should spend around 250 for a camera

I ended up not buying one right when I started... It took me until November to give in and buy one.

When did you give in and bought an iPod? hehe.
At first I was all against the whole iPod trend until I saw some good deals floating around on fatwallet.
I think my time has come...

I made it through the entire year with my old Sandisk 250mb MP3 player. Sadly at the end of the year it passed on to a better place, and was replaced by a 30gb video iPod.

LOL...we should start an SD450 fan club. i got one too, for ~$250 with 512 SD card. i want the new SD700IS though. my shaky hands require image stabilization for indoor/low light shots. :(

i was using my phone for music (it has itunes) last year, but i bought a "broken" 40gb 4th gen ipod for $74 a couple weeks ago and i fixed it without spending an extra dime :D

Canon stuff is nice...

wait till thanksgiving to get better deals

Woo, sd450 here too. www.slickdeals.net has some good coupon deals too - some time ago I saw the the sd600 for $222.

The Nikon ones are pretty nice too, and cheap.

Nikon Coolpix L4- $113.89 (Amazon)

And there's always the remanufactured ones- I got a Nikon Coolpix 4600 4MP last Christmas for $115 (Amazon), used it all year, took it on a 2 month trip to Vietnam, worked perfectly. Until it was stolen before I left :( But yeah, I've bought a lot of used products and have never have problems. You're bound to drop it eventually, so might as well drop a used product than a new one.

I'm all for purchasing Canons. They have some of the best lenses in the biz, SD is a much better format than Sony MemoryStick, and the features are great for the price.

It's just not the best at night shots.

ok looks like i should probably blow around 270 for the camera and accessories aghhhh
