My college counselor advised me to include a picture of myself on my resume, so I did. But I've read elsewhere that a lot of people think that's weird or a really bad idea. What's the general concensus? Did you include a picture on your resume??

I’ve never heard of anyone doing this before. I don’t see how it could hurt you, but I don’t really see how it could help either. I guess it could help show you as real human being and maybe give your essays more of an impact, but I just can’t imagine someone getting chosen over someone else just because they had a picture…

I had wondered about this when my son applied to schools. I believe the Claremont colleges in Calif. do ask for a photo but they are the only schools I heard that do. I think it can’t hurt. But it isn’t something that is common so curious why your counselor thought it was a good idea.

hm… op, is this international school?

Well it could hurt… Your picture reminds the first reader so much of her unpleasant ex, well, you know what happens to your app, right? LOL!

A resume isn’t supposed to include a picture. I’ve never seen a professional resume with a picture, nor have I ever seen a career services professional suggest one.

A picture should not be included in your application because it is potentially biasing.

Vassar had an optional section to add a photo for a “personal touch.” Apart from that, I did not include a photo with any app, even on the resume on my “additional info” section. Nor do I know anyone who did. But I don’t know that it would necessarily harm your chances. Probably just surprise and possibly confuse the adcoms a bit. I can’t see it impacting anything too negatively, though.

jvtDad… no, not international. I’m in the U.S.

My counselor didn’t say why I should include a picture, but she did stress several times that I should. Maybe it was to help me be seen as a “real human being”, or just to make my resume stand out somehow??

I did get a surprising EA acceptance to one of my reaches… guess we’ll never know if the picture had any impact at all, but knowing now that it’s not the norm, I’d love to know what the adcoms thought or said about it being there!

I guess to “put a face to a name.” I could only see this applying more for liberal arts schools, but congratulations on your acceptance, essayedout!

RedSeven… just curious what you mean by it being potentially biasing? Biasing in a bad way?

When D applied a few years ago, I recall one school, I think Columbia, allowed candidates to upload a picture so they could associate a face with the application. It could be a picture doing an activity, or a stick figure drawing, or whatever.

S included an arts supplement for his ED school, which was a website showcasing his music/performing arts background. It obviously included photos/videos of him.

He also included a section that had photos illustrating his Common App Essay. He wrote about a humorous situation, and thought it wouldn’t hurt to back up his essay with photographic evidence. He was admitted, so I guess it didn’t hurt.
