Did you interview at Macalester?

(it was recommended I re-post in this forum)

I'd like to talk to anyone whose kid interviewed at Mac. Thanks!

My kid interviewed at Mac and is now a freshman there. What would you like to know?

My S interviwed at Mac. It was his first interview and he really enjoyed it. He's planning to apply. My niece went there many years ago and loved it.

BethieVT - Was the Macalester interview informational or evaluative...actually! My D is interviewing there a week from Saturday and she'd love to know what to expect. Her previous interviews have been more conversational and geared to what she wanted to know, rather than what the interviewer wanted to know. Thanks.

I'll ask my son when he gets home from school. I know that he and the interviewer were laughing and still chatting in an animated fashion when they came out to get us. He said she'd been really nice and he felt comfortable with her right away.

Except for Pomona, most of his interviews (he's done at least 10) have been light and conversational. At Pomona, he felt like he was being stringently evaluated.

Since Mac was his first interview, I did do a mock interview the night before asking him questions like "How would you describe yourself as a student?", "Why are you interested in Macalester?", etc. Also reminded him he could buy time by saying things like "That's a really interesting question; I'll have to think about that." Mostly, they just want to get to know the student a little better and of course answer questions. He has told me that the most common question is asking him to describe his high school.

Also before each visit and interview, we looked over the college guides and web sites and figured out a question or two he could ask. He goes into interviews with a small reporter's notebook where he jots down his questions in case he forgets them and also takes notes during the interview. Gives him something to do with his hands, shows interest and is something to refer back to later.

My D interviewed there and it was more conversational. She loved it enough that Mac has replaced Reed as her #1 choice right now.
