A few days each week, [Andrew] Russell mans the desk for the Crimson Closet, tucked away in room 115.

The business wear is part of a collaboration by the Student Government Association, Dean of Students Office and the Honors College to provide professional clothing for University of Alabama students, according to the press release.

Russell said in its second year, the closet doesnt attract much traffic. Many days, he only sees one visitor while he spends the remainder of his workday browsing the Internet or doing homework.

SGA President Stephen Swinson, who helped start the program, said the closet responds to a need to help both students with financial needs and those preparing to graduate and apply for jobs.

Maintained through donations, the closet acquired apparel after extensive efforts on behalf of an SGA team led by Alex Clark and Susan Speaker.

…

Lowell Davis, assistant dean of students, said the closet is open free of charge to any student regardless of financial need.

Furthermore, the clothing students receive doesnt have a return policy. Its theirs to keep.

We want to make sure that a lack of a suit doesnt hurt their chances, Davis said. We want to give them just as much opportunity.

These suits aren’t off the Dirt Cheap rack either. The program has received donations from Jos. A Bank and Ann Taylor Loft.

Wonderful. Thanks for sharing this.

I think that this is a wonderful program and I have seen many programs like this in cities to help outfit people transitioning to a business career.

Maybe, all of us have some outfits that our young men have outgrown with little wear to donate, especially those of us whose sons grow daily :)

Wow I definitely had no idea about this. I never saw anything about it and I actually read the CW and paid attention to any and every announcement. I love wearing suits and actually have several nice ones that I no longer wear. I will be sure to donate them next time I am in town.

uaprophet: How nice!
