Some Asians' college strategy: Don't check 'Asian' - Yahoo! News

Yes - White - It doesn’t hurt or help me

Yup - I’m 100% Taiwanese. I think being Asian already puts me at a disadvantage in terms of college admissions, so I don’t want to come across as someone who’s trying to use strategies to get into college. Admission officers pretty much assume you’re Asian if you choose not to report your ethnicity anyway.

Bravo. Same here.

Yes - my last name gives it away anyways

Do you think being Middle Eastern is an advantage/disadvantage? Some people say Middle Easterns are a minority, but I’m not sure.

I’m full Chinese, but you wouldn’t know it from my first or last name. I put my race a) cause I agree with awkwardhamsty, and b) cause in this case it might benefit me. Adoptees ftw.

come on guys. im an asian and im proud to be one. and i dont give a damn if im put to disadvantage for being an asian. if they dont accept me its their loss that they cant add me to their list of alumni:D

Asian pride! Ayy.

^ of course why not!!

Asian pride ayyy

plus my name gives it away so whatever :P

I see the question is specific to this year’s applicants to Columbia. Good luck to all of you. As at all other colleges, the question is optional. You get to decide whether or not to mark any answer at all. In the most recently reported enrolled class at Columbia,

[U-CAN: Columbia University](http://members.ucan-network.org/columbia)

4 percent of enrolled undergraduates were reported to the federal government as “race/ethnicity unknown.” That figure is higher at some other colleges in the Ivy League.

General questions about what the law is, and what college policies are, with links out to official sources for some answers, can be found on the general FAQ page on race in college admission, where discussion is going on about the latest news stories.

Yes - Hispanic, then background: Mexican, then race: american indian including original peoples of the amercas

Hispanic (Colombia) and American Indian (Muisca tribe, although I put down Colombian Indian). As for nationalities, I put down Colombia and Switzerland.

I put filipino and Hispanic(spain) although my name doesn’t sound filipino or hispanic at all… I hope that doesn’t affect my choices (not that i lied, i really am hispanic and filipino)

Cortana431, you’ve been posting both in the Cornel ED and Columbia ED threads…which did you actually ED to?

cornell ed. i hope you don’t mind me posting here =) we’re united in our anxiety over getting accepted ED to top schools

^^^
As long as you don’t get “barnard/columbia” wannabes posting over here, you’re alright w/ us :)

oh god we’re starting this barnard/columbia junk already

Yes! I’m a halfie, so I checked white, Chinese, and Native American, which I actually am. Though (for all of you Native American’s out there), I don’t think my family is considered to be “registered” or at least I didn’t have the info that commonapp wanted when I checked Native American and put in my tribe…do you still think Columbia will count me as a Native American?
