Looking at another school’s Naviance does not add value-
I just posted the links for those on this thread who were wondering
what it was. Data from your own school is obviously quite helpful.
Its not the GPA+SAT data but the fact that it represents exactly from
your school which GPA+SAT combination definitely made it into a
particular college that makes Naviance valuable.

At least at the top schools, admissions is not a national level practice
it is very regional and in most cases sub-regional and specific to the
schools handled by one admissions officer vs another.

Within a state, the eastern region may be less/more competitive
than the western region and you can see a distinct achievement
differences amongst the admits and rejects between regions/sub-regions
though they may all be good fits for a particular college.

They ALL get their data from the same source - the Common Data Set. It just depends on which year is available at the time of publication.

The admissions data for the students who have just entered their freshman year will be available on the next Common Data Set, which should start appearing in early 2009.

Thanks so much for all the input. I was asking because I have pretty good stats according to the “books” but yet when I look at Naviance, schools I thought would be matches, are actually in the slight reach/reach catagory from my school. Just trying to compile a realistic list of schools so all of your responses have been extremely helpful!

*Thank you noob for correctly clarifying my post.

nbg127: Your last post hit the “nail on the head”…If your high school is one in which grads have not had admissions success with a particular college, it will be reflected on Naviance. Even though your individual stats “fit” or are even “above” the stats “according to the books”, it will become a reach to you…
Many, many students found this to be the case in the past few years…

it only has grade and test scores though…it doesn’t factor in SAT II score, ECs, and most importanly the essay, which are all important factors.

Does anyone know any schools in Illinois that use Naviance and allow guests to go on there Naviance site. I know New Trier does this, but does anyone know of any other schools that do this. Thanks.

Well for me naviance has been pretty good. I was right on the SAT score and GPA for previous Duke admits from my HS and I got in. The same holds true for most of the applicants. I would say its not final (athletes and other things skew data), but it does help.

I think Naviance provides good baseline knowledge that applies to your school individually, but isn’t the final word or anything. There are numerous other factors…

It’s funny, because I was actually thinking about this question a few days ago. I was obsessed with Naviance during my junior year because I kept freaking out about not getting into college at all (haha I was a bit paranoid). It was quite intimidating because I had about fifteen schools on my list, and according to Naviance, I could only consider about two or three of them as my safeties/matches. Students who had been accepted to my top-choice school in the past had much crazy high SAT scores and GPA’s, and I began to think that it was a bigger reach than I’d originally anticipated. When I visited the school’s website and looked at the stats, however, I saw that I was more or less in the range of 2012’s admitted students.

So I guess it really depends on your high school and the students. I live in a small, suburban town and go to a high school that’s considered very “preppy,” and many students are involved in dozens of clubs, sports teams, bands/orchestras, and student government. Most people I know are super serious about their grades and work like crazy to study for the SATs/ACTs. We’re all very competitive (academically as well as with everything else), and the statistics of the students are not necessarily representative of the data of the colleges that they get accepted to.

PS - I ended up getting accepted to my top-choice/major reach school :)

Ha, if my school used this thing it would be completely unhelpful… I can’t even remember the last time someone from my HS got into any kind of competitive school… :/

When your school is so small, and only one person ever got accepted to Princeton, you laugh when you look at the scattergram because you find out what his SAT score was.

My school uses Naviance and I think I fed an addiction for awhile… When you have something like a scattergram in front of you giving you answers when all you’re desperate to know is DO I HAVE A CHANCE, it’s pretty much your weak spot. I fought it off, and it’s so much easier completing the rest of my applications without looking at Naviance for reassurance, or in other cases, reality checks.

I don’t know yet about how accurate it will be for the class of 2009, but we shall see…
