Did you/would you ever do this?

Say you got admitted to Stanford, and you go visit for the admitted students open house. And on the way to the meeting, you stop by at the bookstore to buy some Stanford paraphernalia- for example a t-shirt. You had a bash and went back to your high school where everyone pretty much shoots for State U.

Would you ever wear that t-shirt to school and possibly become labled as the pompous *******?

p.s. I know this is a petty dilemma, I just want to see what everyone's opinion on this would be. You can change "Stanford" any top-tier school you got accepted to.

I would. You're not being pompous or anything, its just a shirt/sweatshirt. At my school, a lot of kids shoot for the state university (it's a respectable school)....but there are still kids that wear clothing from top-tier schools...it's nothing more than preference I think.

you'd be considered pompous here, so probably not. it's just that the 10 people who are applying to top tier are just so freaking modest, and they'd never do that, so it's kind of been accepted as the norm that you don't walk around like that. We didn't even know someone got accepted (and is going) to harvard this year until she was gone for 3 admit days at brown, cornell, and harvard. If you make it really obvious, people don't think you're being modest=not cool at all

it would be considered pompous at my HS..

It would be considered..."nice shirt." People will wear any shirts here. I've seen people going to the StateU wear Princeton sweatshirts or other ones. They're just sweatshirts people, not a bragging device (unless you walk around going "Stanford, *****es! Stanford!").

I think if you are talented and intelligent enough to be accepted to a top tier university you should be proud. I would wear the shirt, it's just clothing....it's not like you're bragging per se. People probably wear paraphernalia from State U., why should u be excluded from this because you were accepted to an excellent institution. It is not pompous, and if others are offended, then they are insecure.

i wouldn't mind because the state school at my state is better than stanford

"why would you want to go to Stanford when you could go to state school"

I don't think anyone in our history has ever gone to Harvard and my school was built in the 20s

Rick F, while I am not belittling your state school, I highly doubt it is better than Stanford. Well actually, I KNOW it;s not better than stanford. The #1 Public in US is UC-berkeley isn;t better than STanford. I am not one of those people who thinks that anything not IVy is sub par, but Stanford is pretty much as terrific as it gets.

I'd choose my state school over stanford but that has nothing to do with academics lol :p (i hate the california weather)

I wouldn't buy a shirt from any college. They should come free with tuition and fees. :p

I don't see the problem here. If someone is going to care about the shirt you wear, then you probably shouldn't be hanging around with them.

wear the shirt. you earned it.

wait, you earned it or you bought it?

I think if you actually got in, go ahead and wear it. It bothers me when people at my school wear college shirts of places that they most likely won't get in to. But that's just me, and someone's going to say I'm stuck-up or something because of that.

Well maybe they just liked the college. I understand your point if someone hasn't ever been to a certain college and doesn't have a chance of being accepted. Other than that, if someone visits and likes it, why shouldn't they be able to buy a shirt?

This topic is being over-analyzed.

Back in the stone ages, I proudly wore my college sweater all over town, to my old high school when I visited my old counselor, etc. It's simply about feeling good.

BTW, celebrian, how do you feel about Smith college? Would you ever seriously consider attending? (my apology for hijacking this thread)

why do you ask? Am I being stalked?

haha, no stalking, but I will PM you an invitation...

There was a girl at my school who got Yale EA (it was a well known fact it was a development admit) and plastered her car with a huge Yale sticker a week after she got her letter. Even her friends thought it was in poor taste.

My school's a private school with a uniform but in one of the last weeks of school, they have "College Day" where seniors are allowed to wear the shirt or sweatshirt or sweatpants of the school they will attend. That's usually when everyone silently brags but it's accepted.

I typically buy a t-shirt or sweatshirt or shorts when I visit a college I really like. I don't wear them around but I sleep in them or when I hang out my house watching movies or something. Wearing it to school just seems tacky.
