Didn't expect to be waitlisted at State Tech School (NJIT)

I applied early action to NJIT on time, but somehow I was waitlisted??
How can this be?
I was sure of at least getting acceptance since I have the stats necessary to be given admission.
I’m kinda upset about this? What could be the reason? Was I really that bad of a candidate? Were there many more qualified candidates that I was waitlisted? Should I call tomorrow the school to inquire about waitlist?

What were your stats?

@MuffinLord1

Did some parameters go missing?

@MYOS1634 I checked and they received all the parameters, but they received my SAT scores a bit late, but it was still a week or two before they sent out my letter.

@acron611 I have another thread where you can see details for my stats, but I have at least 3.5 UW GPA, weighted was 3.83; New SAT score: 1400

Same happened to me, & I applied for early action & got waitlisted. I eventually got denied.

It happens. It doesn’t mean that you’re a bad candidate, they just accepted their maximum # of applicants & they have the waitlist as a backup in case most of their accepted students do not attend.

Just apply to other schools & keep checking you NJIT application. If you are still interested you can send a follow up email ASAP.

Good luck!

Your stats are excellent so I understand your confusion. You could have been waitlisted because of “Tufts syndrom”, ie., they figured you wouldn’t attend anyway since your stats are well above their average.
You could still apply to NYIT, Penn State Altoona (2 years Altoona, graduate from University Park - write Up as first choice, Altoona second?), some SUNy’s (Stony Brook, Binghamton, Geneseo, Buffalo), and depending on your EFC + exact major there are lots of good private colleges that admit students (Feb 1 deadline).

@MuffinLord1 You are an excellent candidate for that school. Dont know why they waitlisted you… Most likely they ran out of spots to give because many people applied. 10/20 friends applied to it. I understand your frustration. If there is still room, you will most likely get in when they go to the waitlist. If you still want to go, send them a letter saying that you are still interested.

Best of luck dude.

@MuffinLord1 I woukld recommend that you apply to other schools though

@MYOS1634 Maybe…but I was considering NJIT seriously and wouldn’t hate to go there if I got accepted to Honors College. I discussed Penn State with my parents earlier and we kinda ruled them out because I’m applying to Temple, which we think will give some sort of scholarship, hopefully. (probably won’t make it into their honors college) NYIT, we didn’t consider since we had applied to NJIT-I’ll see about it now.

I’ll see about the SUNY’s since I’ve pretty much applied to all the colleges I’ve wanted to.
I ended up applying to [full list]: University of Maryland-College Park, UMass-Amherst, Bryn Mawr, Wellesley, Smith, NYU, TCNJ, Rutgers, Rowan, Kean, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Temple.

@acron611 I think I will send them a letter soon once I have some accomplishments that I can update to the school so they see my interest. But that would only move me from waitlist to accepted at best and I wouldn’t be considered for Honors college or scholarships- most likely. They’ve probably already awarded what they could for scholarships…

Since you’ve done a commonapp already, you can easily add Muhlenberg, Dickinson (both good for the sciences), Marist if you’re interested in CS, Allegheny for CS and bio.

Amazingly, I’ve been accepted and given some scholarship by NJIT! @MYOS1634
Right now, that makes NJIT comparable to the costs for Rutgers Camden except I don’t know about Honors College yet. I did not even show any interest or send any emails so I’m rather shocked, but happy still! I plan to send an update email with my sat math 2 score and some minor accomplishments- I hope I’ll have one more semimajor accomplishment this weekend if all goes well.

@MuffinLord1 - what happened? How did they change their mind and admit you - and with scholarship?

Great news! :D/

@sunnyschool I have entirely no idea. I really did not even send an email or speak to an admissions officer at all, so I’m about as stunned as you are. I suppose maybe enough people got off the waiting list that I was admitted? I don’t know.

Well, it’s great news. You deserve it. Congrats! =D>

Congratulations

@MuffinLord1 my D applied to both Rutgers Camden and NJIT…not sure where she is going yet, but, since you mentioned your costs between Rutgers and NJIT, I wondered if you were considered for the ‘Bridging the Gap’ program at Rutgers Camden. It made a significant difference in our net price. It may be something to look into if you haven’t already…

@MuffinLord1 : any update on the rest of your college search?

In any case, congratulations on NJIT

@mommabear67 I did hear about the “Bridging the Gap” program and now finally after some universities urging my parents to file the FAFSA…they finally are. I don’t know all the financial details, but if I can figure out some stuff, then I may try to change my financial aid status at colleges where I haven’t received my admission decisions yet…

@MYOS1634 No updates really on my college search. The only thing is I should be receiving my Rowan University admission decision soon since I applied several months ago.
