Didn't get into SUNY Oneonta? Why?

Great News!

Congratulations raisume!

I work for Oneonta, not in admissions! Oneonta has been working very hard to get past its decades old reputation of being a party school (stoneonta). Many departments have been evaluating and improving their majors (Education, Economics and Business, Communications, Music Industry) and attaining “major” specific accreditation. Our goal is to be a first choice school. To do this, we must offer top rated programs/majors in a pleasant and state of the art environment.

A lot of money has been spent in the last decade or so improving programs and beautifying the campus. We also have an excellent alumni support system. Alumni give, financially, and otherwise. The # of scholarships we offer now is 4x the amount offered a short time ago.

I am sorry for the folks being denied. But Oneonta is now a much more selective school. It is not something odd going on this year. And of course you can get a great education at many of the other SUNY schools. Good luck to you.

^ Wow, that’s a news. So does that mean 2-4 years from now, Oneonta will be in the catching “Ivy league” with Binghamton and New Paltz?

I heard Oneonta got over 20,000 applications this year for 2400 spots. I have no verification of this, but will be very interested to see the final numbers come out. For us…time ticks on and no news yet from Oneonta. He has 8 other acceptances, some are out financially, but 2 other SUNY’s for sure. But we can’t focus until he hears from his first choice…Oneonta. March is coming to an end so I imagine it’ll be coming soon…one way or another.

I’m just curious about admissions at Oneonta. I read that this year they are accepting only about 39% of the applicants. I know many kids who worked hard and have been accepted, and I just heard of a kid who was accepted with very mediocre grades, no high level classes, and not great SAT’s. What would be the reason for him being accepted and not another student who had higher grades, more difficult classes and over 1000SAT’s(math and english only)

Do u think i will get into suny albany i have a 3.0 average and i got 1100/2400 on the SATs gonna retake them tho and also take the ACTs

Out of curiosity, why would you ask about Albany on a thread about Oneonta and when there is a specific section for SUNY Albany on the discussion menu? I suggest you ask about your chances there where there will presumably be better info.

Has oneonta improved a lot since 2010? I just got my acceptance w/ $5,870 scholarship. I am thinking of going business but am, unsure yet. I have applied to Binghamton, Albany, and stony and as my first choices and Oneonta as a safety.

The SUNYs have always been selective, and are getting even more so. Like many state schools, it’s also first come, first served. I have an old friend who was accepted to MIT many years ago, but rejected from his state flagshp. He did not apply until late in the process to his state school, and all of the seats in his major were filled. They would not accept Einstein once that section was closed for admissions. With the SUNYs, especially the smaller ones like Oneonta, the problem becomes even more acute because they simply cannot accept more than a set small amount, and once a major or course of study has all of the applicants it can handle, that is it. The 4 universities, StonyBrook, Albany, Binghamton and Buffalo have some more leeway in terms of actual numbers because they are bigger schools, though Binghamton with its higher benchmarks and being a smaller university is highly selective. And yes, HEOP can make a difference in that consideration is made for those who don’t quite make the benchmarks and some slots are reserved for HEOP candidates which means even fewer seats for those applying regularly.

Congratulations t all getting accepted to the SUNYs. Most all are excellent schools.

Ddk-- Like Binghamton and Albany, Oneonta is AACSB accredited in their business major. I am not sure Stony Brook has a business major. One benefit of Oneonta is their smaller class sizes and ability to get to know professors. It really helps for references and advice.

I just got accepted i had
90 gpa weighted
86 unweighted

Hispanic male with a lot of work exp and only significant EC was going to Stony Brook for SARAS program. Only 3 AP’s calc BC, chem, bio

Also had a great essay and recommendations

D received her Oneonta acceptance yesterday. Honestly not expecting to hear so soon. Business letter sized envelope with a nice acceptance note, a brochure regarding the school and upcoming events, and a card to return with the tuition and room deposit.

She had 3.6 UW, all honors, 5 AP’s and 5 SUNY classes. 1860 (1240 CR&W) SAT. Great EC’s. They also said financial aid info will be coming early March. Hope that means any potential scholarship info as well. Good Luck to all.

My son got an acceptance letter from Oneonta yesterday. He has not seen the school so he’s not sure how he feels…I’m thinking it might be a good fit. Happy he’s accepted!
I am a bit concerned because he’s thinking of majoring in sociology / poli sci and those are not popular majors at the school. Any feedback?? Better for this at New Paltz? (waiting for decision). Also wondering how internships are managed… so important in the job market. He would love minoring in the music management program at Oneonta if they do majors and minors…

FYI: S’s stats 3.35 (partially weightd-weird system at his HS), SAT: 650M 610CR 560 CR, no school activities but other EC’s. 2 AP courses, many honors classes, extra science & math.
