Dietitian: Where? What? Help!!

I feel like I've been posting everywhere by now. Well, to make my question short. I'm considering a career change (and major change), and the career I'm seriously considering is DIETETICS (RD), which requires to attend an accredited program in order to obtain licence. I'm living abroad (OOS for tuition purposes), but would like to choose carefully where I'd like to return to so I could get the most out of academical and employment opportunities.

*Which states offer better internships and work opportunities in DIETETICS?

Examples of employment/internship places for RD's (according to BLS Dietitians and Nutritionists ):

Dietitians and nutritionists held about 60,300 jobs in 2008. More than half of all jobs were in hospitals, nursing care facilities, outpatient care centers, or offices of physicians and other health practitioners. State and local government agencies provided additional jobs—mostly in correctional facilities, health departments, and other public-health-related areas. Some dietitians and nutritionists were employed in special food services, an industry made up of firms providing food services on contract to facilities such as colleges and universities, airlines, correctional facilities, and company cafeterias.

Other jobs were in public and private educational services, community care facilities for the elderly (which includes assisted-living facilities), individual and family services, home healthcare services, and the Federal Government—mostly in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Some dietitians were self-employed, working as consultants to facilities such as hospitals and nursing care facilities or providing dietary counseling to individuals.

*One of my choices is FSU, because they have an accredited program and I could get instate tuition rates, so what do you think about Tally??

*I know dietitians can work virtually anywhere, so any opinions or comments would be highly regarded :)

Thank you!

I don’t know that much, but what I can tell you is that my mom is a Sports Nutritionist and went to Simmons College in Boston for undergrad and got her masters at Boston University. There are a ton of hospitals around here, so that’s a lot of opportunities for internships in that sort of environment.

McPucksss… great to hear! does your mom work for a school/college or a sports team? I’d really appreciate if you could ask her how was her experience like and if she likes her job so far. thank you for your comments!

My mom is self-employed, but I know she did some sort of internship or fellowship at mass general back in the day. She does one-on-one counseling with clients mostly athletes, but then also gives weekend-long workshops with an exercise physiologist about 10 times a year as well as shorter talks for collegiate and pro sports teams, she also writes articles for various magazines as well as books. She loves her work.

Thanks for your reply. My first thought my lovely: it’s just great that after working so many settings she’s still working as a dietitian. And the also ecouraging… because that’s so what I’m looking for. I don’t really know if I’d end up in sports nutrition… but it sounds great and very diverse. My sort of thing. Kudos to your mom!!
