Hi, I just received my admittance letter, it says I was admitted for a spot at UR starting Jan 2010. The letter goes on to say that I know this is not what you are expecting and they are sorry not to be able to give you direct admittance. It also says you may be able to go to UR's study abroad program in italy.

The letter adds that UR has been doing January starts for a few students for years?
Does anyone know why they do this?

thanks!
(i'm kinda upset about the weird school year start so I can't live the true freshman experience, but at the same time glad to offered guaranteed admission in January.

All schools suffer an attrition over the first semester. Because a number of students drop out after fall semester, this opens up room in classrooms and dorms for students to start at UR for the spring term.

According to the 2008-2009 UR Fact Book (available through the UR Provost’s webpage), there were approx 40 fewer freshman enrolled at the beginning of the second semester this year than there were at the beginning of first semester.

Thank you for sharing this information. Unfortunately I cannot view the factbook becuase I don’t have a myRochester ID

seattlestudent-- the fact book is public (no UR ID needed!) and available here:

Ahh thank you! I must have been trying to access a different page.
