Differed Wesleyan to ED 2

I thought I was in love with Wesleyan so I applied ED, but they differed me to ED 2. I didn't send my test scores, and I may be hippie dippie but I don't believe in that standardized crap. They either want to see my test scores, not happening, or my first semester grades and compare me to a whole new pool of people. So, is it really worth my time to commit to them another two months or should I ED 2 to Pitzer. I really like that school also and it is not their first rodeo, so to speak, with test optional. What do each of these schools have to offer? Is it really worth my time to ED 2 to wesleyan? or should I just differ into RD and see where my chances are elsewhere?

Hi KeyYun. The same thing happened to my daughter with Wesleyan deferring her to ED 2. She didn’t submit her test scores either…very interesting. It seems they may not be 100% on board with their recent test optional decision. Funny thing is that her second choice is Pitzer also. She still isn’t sure what she is going to do. Good luck with your decision.

I think if you are deferred you should really put it out to Pitzer if that’s your first choice, Pitzer with the Claremont colleges way exceeds what Wesleyan can offer and they are very generous, go all out for Pitzer and forget Wes, just my 2c

^Except, that Pitzer is no slam dunk these days either (as others have pointed out.)

Thanks for the points of view Englishman & circuitrider. What is the primary difference between the type of people Pitzer will admit and Wesleyn’s profile? My daughter has test scores & a GPA slightly below Wesleyan’s median, but slightly above Pitzer’s median. However, she also has a really strong supplemental essay for Pitzer and great extracurriculars, leadership, and international service. Seemingly, she is a shoe-in for Pitzer, but it is confusing and scary that their acceptance rate is so low. Why is it lower than Wesleyan? What exactly defines a student Pitzer is looking for? Are there any specific attribute necessary for acceptance to Pitzer?

I am from Montana, so I think the from a random state thing is to my benefit, and I am semi-fluent in Chinese, have had multiple leadership positions, and am full IB. I have a pretty good GPA, but my test scores are not that great. It is nice to hear about other cool people on this planet nwdramamama I think Pitzer looks amazing, and I heard that 70% of the student body accepted don’t submit their scores. Cool right! I think I will still do ED 2 to Wesleyan stay in, but tell Pitzer I really like them. Luckily, my school has a good relationship with Pitzer, but they have yet to have a student attend Wesleyan. I do think that Wes is a little weird with their test optional stuff. However, I think that ED 2 isn’t always the best for Pitzer and may not decrease or increase my chances, and possibly your daughters chances based on ED or RD.

I also heard the pool of people that Wesleyan differed was still really small nwdramamama so your daughter may still have an amazing chance if she has a good first semester GPA and stays in ED2.

Somebody’s kid got rejected at Wesleyan and now has a very, very, very big axe to grind.

Hey KeyYun,

My daughter was just admitted ED1. She’s also a recruited athlete and thus had the benefit of a “pre-read”, so we know what we were doing when we submitted.

She is also full IB diploma candidate, with a heavy concentration of science (chose Physics as her two-year science HL and is in HL Calc among other HL courses). Her test scores were strong, but not “I’ll get in wherever I apply” strong (2180). In any event, she submitted them.

The admissions officer who works with the coach specifically mentioned IB when giving the coach the pre-read report. It’s true that many schools put a lot of value on IB, but I thought you might want to know that. Some schools put an extra premium on it, though I have no idea if Wesleyan is one of those. She has a 3.9+ GPA, so it may not have mattered that much in her case, but still … an admissions officer made a point of mentioning it to the coach.

Good luck! I hope it works out, but if not, there are a lot of great schools out there.

Oh, and don’t listen to a thing @Englishman has to say. He makes it his full-time job to lurk around and find any opportunity to disparage Wesleyan. All you have to do is look at his profile and you will see that in 99% of his posts he manages to do just that. Even here. in your thread. Your decisions are too important to be influenced by someone with dysfunctional motive and agenda. Ignore him.
