I recently received a letter from the admissions office that told me I was differed from Wake Forest. I am really upset because WF was my first choice and I thought I had a good chance of getting in. Here are my stats:

1230 on SATs

600 on Bio SAT subject test, 690 on US history subject test

27 on the ACTs

4.8 weighted GPA

vice president of FBLA and jr. PHA, member of Key Club, National Honor Society and History Club

spent two summers volunteering at my local hospital

Any suggestions on how to improve my chances of getting in regular decision??

Improve test scores. Get your old man to make a $million pledge to the DemonDeacon Fund.

You may want to change guidance counselors, too? (Or whoever suggested you were a lock.) You may be admitted, and here's hoping, but you really need a decent Plan B, too, if I might suggest.

I think you have a chance, but I don't think it is by any means a GREAT chance. Your scores are on the low end for Wake and I am imagining based on your sn that you are from NY which is a more competitive state to apply out of.

Wake is a reach school for you, but to improve your chances, which certainly are not poor chances by any means, send in an extra letter of recommendation and write a heartfelt letter stating that it is indeed your top choice for school.

I would apply to other schools though for sure.
Elon perhaps, is very similar to Wake and you would have a great chance of getting in there.

NYBlondie:
Don't feel bad about the deferral, I got one too w/ a 1350/2070, alumni connection, and similar activities (although I had a 3.6 GPA, significantly less than yours). It's going to be a looong 4 months, but it's definitely worth it waiting for Wake.

BTW, I wanted to second njmom- wilmingtonwave, I really do enjoy reading your posts more than those of anyone else on this thread. Thank you for your always perceptive and understanding insights :)

nyblondy -- the main point I took away from the college application process w/ DD 2 years ago is that college admissions is one big roll of the dice. However, having said that, I would suggest expanding your list of schools a little to include a few more like Fairfield.

i got deferred last year and got waitlisted in regular decision. i had a higher SAT and about the same grades. The SAT is what killed me. i had a 1290/1600 and a 30/36 on the ACT. I was coming from SC in a highly competitive HS.

I got deferred as well. I forgot to post here but did post on my blog. I had a 31 on the ACT and a pretty well balanced application. I guess they were just taking the very best and I knew I wasn't one of them so I'm not that upset.

Well, I'm not saying that I put my eggs all in one basket but I really should have been getting this stuff ready before my response came back from Wake.

Safeties: West Virginia University, University of Kentucky, maybe Pitt
Reach/Wish: UNC Chapel Hill, Vanderbilt, Wake?

My friend got a full tuition scholarship to Pitt with similar stats to mine so it was kind of tacked on the last minute.
