Difference between a 3.59 and 3.6?

Please help me out here!
Do colleges really see a significant difference?

They see a difference of .01.

If there is an applicant with the same exact test scores as you and just as good of EC’s, essays, and teacher recommendations that .01 will make a difference for admissions. Try arguing with a teacher about the difference between 89.4% and 89.5%. That B+ was the bane of my existence throughout junior year.

I honestly think that it really isn’t that big of a difference, and I applicants don’t compete with each other 1 on 1 for admissions. Both applicants would probably have the same fate if they were from the same school.

There’s a difference, yes… but not a significant difference at all.

^ “Both applicants would probably have the same fate” - This is completely false! GPA is only ONE component of an applicant. Rank and rigor are far more important, in addition to essays, recs, test scores and ECs.

it matters to your class rank

are you guys really serious? there is NO WAY a .01 diff matters in admissions…especially in smaller schools who use holistic admissions and look at every grade in every class…even in stats driven schools this wouldn’t matter…

the OP just asked about the diff between the two: didn’t ask if the two GPA’s were from the same school, made a diff in rank etc…if that is what he/she wants to ask, maybe they will come back and clarify…

what if you have a 3.6 and i have a 3.59. Should we be the same rank?

@Veggieburger: I was saying if everything was literally the same between two people, which doesn’t happen, and their GPA’s differed by only .01, the would probably have the same fate in admissions.

A 3.6 looks more aesthetically pleasing then a 3.59. A 3.59 is a dis-organized and ugly number.

I am sure colleges think the same as me.

^I’m guessing that’s sarcasm?

Its the difference between Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude at Virginia Tech

^^ Your right about that.

^ And that too.

They will see a very insignificant difference of .01 (I actually did not do the calculation myself, I am just using what hahalolk posted on post #2).

I agree. If you think mathematically, there is nearly no difference. But, just by glancing at the two numbers, 3.6 seems much more “appealing”.
