Difference between AMS & MAT courses

Majoring in CS and trying to figure out what is the better/easier course sequence to take for the math requirement. On the Sample Course sequence for the Major in CS, AMS 151, 161 are included for the sequence, but I also saw that you could take MAT 125, 126, 127. What are the differences between the courses and is one an easier track than the other. One difference I did notice was that the AMS sequence does not have a recitation but the MAT sequence does. Is AMS recommended over the MAT sequence for CS major?

For the college of engineering AMS courses are recommended. And hint hint they are also much easier. The recitations just add a credit to the course but they aren’t necessary so why take a course with one?

Thanks for the tip on the AMS courses.

In general, MAT courses focus primarily on pure math and proofs. AMS prepares you for futures such as actuaries, statisticians, operations, etc. MAT courses are best if you plan to do something within research in physics and pure math.

Since you’re doing CS, you’re in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS), so AMS would be the better choice (AMS is also in the CEAS while MAT is in the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS), so the AMS courses are more oriented toward those majors rather than MAT). If you work better with examples and using actual numbers then take the AMS courses.
