Difference between Asian and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander?

I have a question about race on the Common App. What is the difference between Asian and Native Hawaiian/ Other Pacific Islander? Does Native Hawaiian/ Other Pacific Islander count as a URM? Or is it basically thrown into the mix of overrepresented minorities?

hawaii? few people apply from there…in the applicant pool, they would be rare. maybe hawaiian, pac islander, etc are URMs.

. . . one group is from Asia and the other is from the Pacific islands? I’m not sure what the question really is here. Is there a specific country that you feel could go either way?

Sorry if my question was unclear. I was just wondering if people who are considered Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander are overrepresented? I’ve read a lot here on CC about how Asians are overrepresented in the applicant pool, and I was wondering if Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders were too.

I am from Hawaii and it its very advantageous to be Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander when applying to college. However, unlike what Junie implied, being from Hawaii does not mean that you are Native Hawaiian.

If you are an Asian from Hawaii, you’re Asian, not Native Hawaiian

Being a Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander is considered URM = very advantageous.

Okay, cool. So Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander is not an overrepresented minority?
