Seems like there is a lot of overlap in these biology majors, but what is the difference between them in career choice for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts and Science?

Well they told me for what my major is (biology-preprofessional) that liberal arts and science would be the college that I would be focused in. Plus the courses focused more on the major.

i dont understand anyares.

I always thought that majors that were in clas AND in another college…CLAS always had the watered down version.

for example CLAS economics is much less of a load than college of business economics.

i would assume that clas biology has less requirements for the major and may even be a BA not a BS.

if you want to double major…for example in chem, choose the one in CLAS

I have no clue when CALS got a bio major, but CLAS had the original. Physiology and Molecular Biology of Animals (PCB4723C) is probably the hardest class you will take in the program. I think it has the most pre-reqs of any class at UF. But if you make to that class then you should be able to pass it.

Doesn’t exist. Chemistry in in CLAS.

As stated before, CLAS is the original. You get a BS.

Nope.

ya i meant if you want to double major in biology and chem, choose the (one)BIOLOGY in clas…

alot of Calculus.

Both are BS degrees

[Office of the University Registrar](http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/catalog/programs/majors/biology.html) cals

They both seem to have tracts for preprofessional students. Courses or at least course choices seem to be very similar. Wonder what the purpose of having the two different majors is. Is one considered harder? Doesn’t seem to be significantly different. Curious. Seems like someone should have the answer. Anybody?

Besides the math the biggest difference is the 2 colleges. My S was in clas for his first year, there were so many people in that college my son felt like just a number. He moved to cals and has been much happier, there are 15 people in his major and his advisor has an open door policy.

Cals is a smaller and a can be more personable.

Money. Each dept on campus is like its own company under the UF umbrella. Bio is a popular major, so they are probably trying to attract students. The CALS one must have started within the past year, because I would have definitely known about it.

Well CLAS is the biggest college on campus with 20+ majors. I personally think advisers, in general, are overrated. I got the information I needed on my own. I guess it useful to some.

Doesn’t CLAS have a foreign language requirement that other colleges don’t?

yeah, CLAS need 8-10 foreign language credits…

the site that afa81 was extremely helpful…thank you!
