Hi! So I’m currently majoring in Computer Science, but I really don’t know the difference between Computer Science and Software Engineering at SLO. Can someone please elaborate? Thanks!
Software Engineering is a newer major to better prepare students for the reality of software development in the workplace vs. more theoretical computer science degree. Practically, students must take two more Calc courses than CS major as the degree is an “engineering” degree this may or may not have real world value. The real world value seems to be in preparing SE majors for working in teams by taking more psychology courses than CS and doing a Senior Project working in a team on a software project for a corporation not required by CS major. People in the sw industry seem to think that the SE major is a step forward in preparing students to enter the workforce vs. CS degree.
This is a nice little blurb that explains CS/CE/SE.
