Difference between CS31 and PIC10A

As far as I know, both Compsci31 and 32 and PIC10A and B are C++. What is the difference between these two classes? I'm required to take both CS and PIC for my major, do you think it would be possible for me to petition off one of them with the other? Thanks.

CS 31 is the same material as PIC 10A, but harder. What kind of major requires two redundant courses?

excellent, i love it when i'm gonna take a dumbed down class especially when i know the material back and forth already!

pic10a for the win!

I don't think there is a major which requires PIC and CS. Math majors do take PIC, but they don't take CS .. odd.

PIC10A is cake I heard. I think it's about the same difficulty as MATLAB.

My major, which I believe is the only major on campus that requires both PIC10A and CS31 is "Linguistics and Computer Science."

So what do you guys think the chances of me petitioning off one of them will go through?

Linguistics and CS requires CS 131 not CS 31
I don't think you can petition out of those classes

You could formerly petition from CS using PIC 10, but that was years ago, when even Java could get you out of 31.

grark:
Yeah, CS 131 requires CS 31, 32, and 33. Unfortunately I have to take all of those first in order to take CS 131.

Boelter:
Do you think they still let students petition out of CS 31?

How hard is PIC 10A? I have no prior programming experience and no idea how to work Java or C++ or whatever.

I'm thinking of doing PIC 10A because employers and business school admissions might like to see it on my transcript.

the difference is that CS31 will rape you....Im not kidding

No, there is NO way to petition out of CS 31 by taking any other course. Why do you worry?

Pic 10 assumes no prior experience with programming. There is a heavier emphasis on strings and data structures, instead of the pointers and classes, in which this quotation applies:

PXalpine:
well in that case, that's pretty messed up. Especially since it doesn't look like CS 30 series are open to CS & Ling majors at the moment. I would just ask a counselor about it

also, PIC 30 and CS 163 apparently exist, but I've never seen them offered :/
