So, I can't decide between East Asian Language and Culture, and East Asian Studies. What's the difference? I know that East Asian Studies is more historical, but I don't really understand what the major differences are. I want to study East Asia broadly, but I also want to focus on China and Korea. Help?

EALC is more language and culture, literature, while EAAS(East Asian Area Studies) is much more interdisciplinary and allows for more freedom on which classes you want to take. I used to be an EAAS major, and for the seven upper-division electives, you can take basically ANY course as long as it pertains to East asia, which i loved. It can be in architecture, cinema (in the awesome new building), health, Art, business. You can take classes in different schools you normally wouldn't be able to. I think you also can take several electives as EALC, but the major has more requirements (one lit course, one civilization course)

Another large difference is EALC requires 6 semesters (3 years) of language, while EAAS requires 4 (2 years).

According to the EAAS website, it says:
How does an EAAS major differ from a major in East Asian Languages and Cultures? If your interests are in historical or contemporary political, economic, social and cultural changes in East Asia, you probably belong in the EAAS major. However, if your interests are primarily in language, literature and culture, you should strongly consider the EALC major.

Thanks tumbleweed! I think EAAS will be the best choice
