Difference Between GE and Prep courses?

hi everyone. im new here, but i have a question about the GEs at UCLA and the prep courses that we have to take for our majors.

can the GE and the prep courses overlap, and if they do, can we count them as both requirements [ GE & prep course ]? do we get credit for taking it? im sure that we can't count the units twice, but can we have the course satisfy both requirements? for example, can CHEM14A be counted towards BOTH a GE & a prep course?

also, there are requirements for foreign language, american insitution, writingI&II. do we only need to take a course of a foreign language to satisfy the foreign language requirement, or do we have to take a set number of classes/units?

any feedbacks/comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks because im clueless about what is going on.

p.s. im sorry if there is another thread made already that answered the questions i have. if so, please redirect me to that link because i must have overlooked it when i browsed through the forum.

Yes. In fact, that's the way to do it.

You have to show proficiency up to and including level 3 by (a) passing with AP credit; (b) place into level 4 or above on the placement exam; (c) take at most 3 quarters worth (3 levels) of a foreign language.

yes courses can satisfy multiple requirements. it's smart to use prep courses in your major to satisfy some requirements. for example, 2 of my poli sci prep courses satisfy my two social science GEs.

for foreign language, you need to pass level 3. this can be done by passing the AP test, passing the placement exam, or taking 3 quarters worth of foreign language at UCLA.

for the writing I, you need to take english comp 3. some people may have fulfilled this already by passing an AP english with a certain score. for writing II, you'll need to take a course that satisfies the writing II requirement. the same goes for american institutions, although passing the AP US history test could satisfy that as well.

have you gone to orientation? chances are, you've already completed some of these requirements, and your orientation counselor will explain which courses you should take to fulfill the remaining requirements. i think you'll get a better understanding after you've gone to orientation, so no worries.

thanks for the replies ucapplicant05 and kfc4u !

just a quick note: you can also fulfill the american institutions requirement with (I believe) grades of B or higher in your US history or govt class...
