Difference Between In School ECs and Out of School ECs

So I’m currently filling out an application for a scholarship and it asks for me to list off in school extracurricularsand out of school extracurricularsas separate. What’s the difference? What are some examples for each?

I find myself strong with clubs such as science club, key club, nhs, robotics, etc. But it seems like none of these count as out of school extracurriculars. However, I don’t want to leave that category blank. What could I add?

Much thanks!

School ECs are run by the school - track team, debate club, student government

Out of school ECs are not run by the school - working at Taco Bell, volunteering at the local soup kitchen.

One is not necessarily “better” than the other.

I would also consider hobbies and interests that are not necessarily an activity organized by someone else. Just for example: “I build Lego cities in my spare time”, “I read everything I can get my hands on regarding the civil war.”, "I watch a lot of old scifi on tv"etc. What do you do in your spare time outside of school? You must have some an activity that you enjoy doing and something you build up and make interesting. For instance, I like to watch old scifi movies on tv, I find it interesting the see how special effects in movies from Japan made in the 70’s used XXX effect vs those made in the US used YYY effect. If you think about it, you can make anything sound interesting.

It all depends on the nature and dedication, not who is organizing the EC.
