What is the Difference between Majors like Chemical Engineering and just Chemistry. They both have to word Chemistry in them so basically you are still learning Chemistry right? Does Engineering people have more opportunties in the future or something?

drr http://www.usm.maine.edu/csce/MajorsHTML/Chemisty.html

Chemisty is the study of chemicals and how they react in the world. Chemists examine how elements interact with each other. They study the properties of elements and compounds. They learn about atomic structure, etc. (It is a lot more complex than that, but you get the idea.)

Chemical engineers are people who study how to manufacture, store and transport chemicals. They need to know a lot about how chemicals react, but they are not particularly concerned with learning new things about chemicals. They are more concerned with how to make a container for long term storage of sulfuric acid, or how to saftely transport gasoline from one area to another and so one. They also concern themselves with how to manufacture large quantities of desired chemicals.

In a very basic sense, Chemistry is more of a pure research and discovery field and Chemical engineering is more of an applied field. There are jobs for both kinds of people. It really depends on what kinds of things interest you.

What about biochemistry?

A good way to learn more about engineering is to hook up with an engineer or two over summer break.....the engineering school experience is quite different than a chem major in the college.

You may wish to visit the UC Berkeley Career Center website for a description of different majors, but this site may be more technical than you really want to get into.

Planning for the Future
- What should I major in?
- Which careers go with my major?
- What are the best career options for me?
- How can I best prepare for the career I'm considering?
- How can I decide which graduate or professional degree to pursue?
- What can I do if I take time off before I go to graduate or professional
school?

What Can I Do With a Major in ... ?
It lists both Chemistry and Chemical Engineering,
but it's more about data and statistics than simple descriptions.
http://career.berkeley.edu/Major/Major.stm

The US Dept. of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics has a description of:

Chemical Engineers
http://stats.bls.gov/oco/ocos029.htm

Chemists and Materials Scientists
http://bls.gov/oco/ocos049.htm

Again, this may be more detail than you really want, but the Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the following when searching for Biochemistry:

Veterinarians

Biological scientists

Chiropractors

Dentists

Dietitians and nutritionists

Optometrists

Physician assistants

Agricultural and food scientists

Science technicians

Physicians and surgeons

Pharmaceutical and Medicine Manufacturing

The UC Berkeley Career Center website lists the following for
What I Can Do With a Major in Bioengineering?
http://career.berkeley.edu/Major/BioEngr.stm

Again, it may be more data and statistics than you are looking for...

is $54,000 and $37,000 a lot of money these days... i don't know... it said that thats the average a Chemical Engineer and a Chemist make in a year.

that's a fine salary. Many people make more, but many make less.

Also it matters a great deal where you live. Some parts of the country are way more expensive to live in than others.

"is $54,000 and $37,000 a lot of money these days... i don't know... it said that thats the average a Chemical Engineer and a Chemist make in a year."

It depends on where in the country you plan to live and work. Here in Silicon Valley, $54k is not much of a living wage when a new home can cost $400k-$1million.
